Fuel supply
Using the right fuel helps keep the environ-
ment clean and prevents engine damage.
Fuel recommendation
The fuel recommended for your vehicle is un-
leaded premium
grade gasolin e. Audi recom-
mends using TOP TIER Det ergent Gasoline
with a minimum oct ane rat ing of 9 1 AKI (9 5
RON). For more inform at ion on TOP TIER De-
tergent Gasoline, please go t o t he official
website (www.toptie rgas .com).
The recommended gasoline octane rating for
your engine can also be found on a label locat-
ed on t he inside of the fuel filler flap . This rat-
ing may be specif ied as AKI or RON.
Your veh icle may also be operated using un-
leaded regular gasoline with a minimum oc-
tane rating of 87 AKI/91 RON. However, using
87 AKI/ 9 1 RON octa ne fue l will slightly re-
duce eng ine perfo rmance .
Use unleaded ga solin e only. Unleaded gaso-
line is available th rougho ut t he USA, Canada,
and in most European countries . We recom-
mend that you do not ta ke your vehicle to
areas or countries where unleaded gasoline
may not be available.

Octane rating
Octane rati ng indicates a gaso line's ability to
res ist engi ne da maging "knock" caused by
premature ignition and detona t ion. Therefore,
buying the correct grade of gaso line is very
important to he lp prevent possible engine
damage and a loss of engine performance.
Gasoline mos t common ly used in the Unite d
States and Canada has the following octane
ratings that can usua lly be found on the filler
pump:
Fuel supply and filling your fuel tank 167
- Premium Grade: 9 1 - 96 AKI
- Regular Grade: 87 - 90 AKI
Explanation of the abb reviations :
AKI = Anti Knock Index = (R+M)/2 = (RON
+MON)/2
RON= Research Octane Num ber
MON = Motor Octane Number.
@ Note
- Do not use any fue l wit h octane rat ings
lower than 87 AKI or 9 1 RON oth er wise
expensive engi ne da mage will occur.
- Do
not use leaded gasoli ne! The use of
leade d gasoline will severely damage
your vehicle's cata lyt ic converter and its
ability t o control exhaus t emissions.
Blended gasoline
Use of gasoline containing alcohol or
MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether )
You may use unleaded gasoline blended with
alcohol or MTBE (commonly referred to as
oxygenates) if the blended mixture meets the
following criter ia:
Blend of gasoline methanol (wood alcohol or
methyl alcohol )
- Anti-knock index mus t be 87 AKI or higher.
- Blend mus t contain no more t han 3% met h-
anol.
- Blend must contain more t han 2% co-sol-
vents.
Blend of gasoline and ethanol (grain alcohol
or ethyl alcohol)
- Anti-knock index must be 87 AKI or higher.
- Blend must not conta in more than 10%
ethanol.
Blend of gasoline and MTBE
- Anti-knock index must be 87 AKI or higher.
- Blend must contain not more tha n 15%
MTBE.
