Emergency situations
General
This chapter is intended for trained emer-
gency crews and working personnel who
have the necessary tools and equipment to
perform these operations.
Starting by pushing or
towing
(D Note
Vehicles with an automatic tran smission
cannot be started by pushing or towing .
Starting with jumper
cables
If necessary, the engine can be started by
connecting it to the battery of another vehi-
cle.
If the engine sho uld fail to start because of a
discha rged or weak battery, the battery can be
connected to the battery of
another veh icle,
using a pair of jumper cables to start the en-
g ine.
Jumper cables
Use only jumper cables of sufficiently
largecross section to safely car ry the sta rter
current. Refer to t he manufacturer's specifica-
tions.
Use only jumper cables which have
insulated
termina l clamps and are properly mar ked for
d istinction :
plus(+) cable in most cases colored red
minus (-) cable
in most cases colo red black .
_& WARNING
Batt e ries contain e lectr icity, a cid, a nd gas.
Any of these can cause very ser ious or fat al
injury . Follow the ins t ructions below fo r
safe han dli ng of your veh icle's battery .
- Always shield you r eyes an d avoid lean -
ing over the batte ry whenever possib le.
Emergency situations 223
- A discharged battery can a lready freeze
at temperatures just be low 32 °F (0 °C).
Before connect ing a j umper cab le, the
frozen battery must be thawed com-
pletely, othe rwise it could explode .
- Do not allow battery acid to contact eyes
or skin . Flus h any cont acted area wit h
wate r immediately .
- Imp roper use of a booster battery to
start a vehicle may cause an explosion.
- Vehicle batter ies generate expl osive gas-
es. Keep sparks, flame and lighted ciga-
rettes away from bat te ries.
- Do not t ry to jump start a ny ve hicle wit h
a low ac id leve l in the battery.
- The voltage of the booster battery m ust
also have a 12-Volt rat ing. The capac ity
(Ah) of the booste r battery sho uld not be
lowe r than that of th e discharged bat-
t ery. Use of batt e ries of d iffe ren t volt age
or subst an t ially differen t "Ah" rat ing
may cause an exp losion and pers onal in-
jury .
- Never charge a frozen batt ery. Gas t ra p-
ped in the ice may cause an explosion .
- Neve r char ge o r use a bat te ry t hat has
been fro zen . The batte ry case may have
be weakened.
- Use of bat t er ies of differe nt volta ge or
substantially diffe ren t ca pac ity (Ah) rat -
ing may cause an exp losion and injury .
The ca pa city (Ah) of the booster battery
should not be lower than that of the dis-
charged battery.
- Before you check anything in the engine
compa rtment, always read and heed a ll

(D Note
- App lying a higher voltage booster bat -
tery will cause expens ive damage to se n-
sit ive e lectronic components, such as
contro l units , relays, rad io, etc .
- There must be no electrical contact be -
