Before you check anything in the engine com-
partment,
always read and heed all WARN-
ING S ¢ A in Working in the engine compart-
ment on page 171.
.,. Park your vehicle on a level surface.
.,. Switch the ignition
off .
.,. Read the coolant level at the coolant expan-
sion tank
¢ page 173, fig . 132. With a cold
engine, it must be above the "min" mark.
With a hot engine, it can be a little above
the indicated range.
The location of the coolant expans ion tank
can be seen in the engine compar t ment illus-
tration¢ page 173.
To obtain an accurate read ing, the eng ine
must be switched
off.
The expans ion tank in your vehicle is equipped
with an electric coolant level sensor.
When the coolant level is too low, the warning
light in the Auto-Check System¢
page 15 will
illuminate until you add coolant and the level
has been restored to normal. Even though
there is an electric coolant level sensor, we
still recommend you check the coolant level
from time to time.
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a lea k in the cooling
system. In the event of coolant loss, the cool-
ing system should be inspected immediately

by your authorized Audi dea ler. It is not
enough mere ly to add coolant .
In a
s ealed system, losses can occur on ly if
the boiling point of the coolant is exceeded as
a result of overheating.
(D Note
Do not add any type of radiator leak sea l-
ant t o your vehicle's engine coolant. Add-
ing radiator repa ir fluid may adverse ly af-
fect the function and performance of your
cooling system and could result in damage
not covered by your New Vehicle Limited

We recommend using only coolant add itive
Gl2 ++, Gl3 or in an emergency Gl2+. Do not
use a different add itive. In an emergency use
plain water until you can get the correct addi-
tive and can resto re the correct ratio . This
shou ld be done as soon as possib le.
If you have lost a considerab le amount of
coolant, then you shou ld add cold ant ifreeze
and cold wate r on ly when the engine is cold.
Always use
new engine coolant when refilling.
Do not fill coolant above the "MAX" mark. Ex-
