Appropriate installation, maintenance and repair procedures are
essential for the safe, reliable operation of vehicle brakes. Anyone who
undertakes to maintain or repair vehicle braking systems must estab-
lish that they neither compromise their personal safety nor the vehicle
integrity by their choice of methods, tools or parts.

• Be certain that you have a jack and lug wrench that will work on the tow vehicle
andthetrailer.Thesameonesmaynotworkonboth,soverifythatyouare
prepared.Youdon’twanttoenduponthesideoftheroadandndthatyouare
not fully prepared.
• In addition to the spare tire that can be mounted on the trailer spare tire
mount, also have available in your tow vehicle’s storage area such useful addi-
tional items as:
•sparebreakawaycablemetalclips;
•extralugnuts;
• wheel chocks (especially important
in areas in which there are hilly or
mountainousdrivingconditions);
•wheelbearinggrease;
•marine-gradegrease;
•sparetie-downstraps;
•additionalbrakeuidforthe
actuator;
•atorquewrenchtocheckandensure
thelugnutsareproperlytorqued;
•roadares.
• Verifythecoupler,hitchandhitchballarethecorrect,speciedsizeandt.
• Be certain the safety cables and breakaway cable are correctly attached.
• Checktie-downsandwinchstraparesecure.
• Thewheellugnutsareproperlytorqued.
• Thetiresareinatedtotheairpressurelevelstampedonthesidewall.
• Thetrailerlightsareoperatingproperly.
• Thebrakesarefunctioningasdesigned.
• Iftheboatisequippedwithatower,itmustbeeitheruprightandlocked,or
lowered and secured. If the tower is
upright, you will need to determine that
the total height of boat, trailer and tower
will be able to clear power lines, bridges,
overpasses or any other impediment.
