Drive Chain
Chain Tensioner
NOTE: The drive chain should be inspected
monthly. New chain has a tendency to
stretch.

Remove the chain case top cover. Check
tensioner spring (Item 1) and chain (Item 2)
[Figure 14] for proper tension. Replace the
tensioner spring if it becomes too loose to
maintain proper chain tension.
NOTE: Chain tension is preset with the tensioner
spring. If the chain becomes excessively
loose, it may be necessary to remove one
link (two pitches). If unable to reassemble,
add an offset link to lengthen the chain.

NOTE: Chain replacement requires draining the
chain case oil. See “Chain Case Oil” on
page 29.
Remove the chain case top and bottom covers.
Remove the chain tensioner spring (Item 1)
[Figure 15].
Remove the master link (Item 2) and remove the
chain (Item 3) [Figure 15]. Install new chain and
master link.
Re-install the chain tensioner spring, check for
proper tension. Re-install bottom and top covers.
Fill chain case with oil. See “Chain Case Oil
Change” on page 29.
