The Calix E7-20 is equipped with front and rear panel out-of-band 10/100 Ethernet
management ports (RJ-45 connectors).
!! The front panel Ethernet management port (MGT-1) is for temporary connection to the
E7-20 for initial turnup and troubleshooting and is located on the E7-20 fan tray
assembly.
!! The rear panel shared Ethernet management ports (MGT-3A, MGT-3B) are for
permanent connection to the OSS, providing management access to the E7-20. One of
the following methods is used with these ports, depending on the service provider's
intraoffice network design:
!! Single Ethernet management port operation is the most common configuration,
where a single physical management interface is connected to the service provider's
back office network. This interface is active regardless of which SCP card is active.
!! Redundant Ethernet management port operation is common with larger carriers,
where two physical management interfaces are connected to redundant back office
networks (typically two different Ethernet switches). The network element has a
single IP address and only one interface is active at a time.
Note: Use a standard 'straight-through' Ethernet patch cable to connect to the E7-20
Ethernet management ports.
Note: When you connect a disabled MGT port on the E7 to an Ethernet switch, the link
status lights on the switch light up (yellow, and then green after 30 seconds). A link is
established between the E7 and the switch, but the Management interface on the E7 is not
enabled and no traffic will pass over the link.
