5.5 Base Unit
5.5-1 Baseplate Replacement
Baseplate halves can be replaced without disassembling
the Clamp. The following procedure requires that the
Clamp be removed from the truck.
1 Remove the Clamp from the truck as described in
Section 5.1.
2 Place wood blocking under the Clamp arms/pads to
raise the baseplates clear of the pallet for removal.
3 Remove the upper and lower hooks, centering tab, and
backrest (if equipped) from the baseplate. For
reassembly, double-torque the capscrews (tighten,
loosen 1/2-turn, immediately retighten) to:
Upper Hooks – 235 ft.-lbs. (320 Nm).
Lower Hooks – 165 ft.-lbs. (225 Nm).
Centering Tab – 165 ft.-lbs. (225 Nm).
Backrest – 75 ft.-lbs. (100 Nm).
CL0411.ill
CAUTION: Replace only one baseplate half at a time.
DO NOT LOOSEN ALL THE BASEPLATE CAPSCREWS
AT THE SAME TIME.
4 Remove the capscrews from the baseplate half to be
replaced. Remove the baseplate.
NOTE: Do not move the Clamp or arms once the
baseplate half has been removed.
For reassembly, tighten the capscrews using the
following technique:
A) Tighten to 1/2 the final torque value shown in Step 4B
by starting at the center and working outward.
B) Tighten to the final torque value using the same
pattern, then double-torque by backing off 1/2 turn
and immediately retightening to the final torque value:
20E, 30E, 33E – 75 ft.-lbs. (100 Nm) – All except T-Bars.
195 ft.-lbs. (265 Nm) – T-Bars.
40E, 45E – 195 ft.-lbs. (265 Nm).
5 Install the new baseplate half, making sure all capscrew
holes are in correct alignment with the cylinders, T-Bars
and bumper (if equipped).
6 For reassembly, reverse the previous procedure with the
following exceptions:
Clean all mating surfaces of
dust, dirt, oil and paint before
installing the baseplate half.
Replace the other baseplate
half using the same procedure
as in Steps 3 through 6.
Check arms manually for
freedom of movement.
