Maintenance, Troubleshooting and
Service
This section covers routine maintenance, troubleshooting
and minor parts replacement. For service and repair, con-
tact the CEM Service Department or local CEM subsidiary
or distributor. A routine preventive maintenance program
is recommended to ensure optimum performance of the
Discover System.
WARNING
This instrument utilizes high voltages. Only tech-
nicians trained in repair and maintenance of high
voltage systems should perform instrument service
and repair. Ensure that the power cord is removed
from the back of the instrument prior to opening the
instrument cover for any maintenance or service.
Routine Maintenance and Cleaning
Sample Chamber – Daily, check the turntable, wash sta-
tion strainer, and sample chamber interior for cleanliness
and clean as necessary.
Turntable - Weekly, clean the turntable.
Cup/Filter Detector - Weekly, clean the cup/fi lter detector.
Optics - Weekly, clean the instrument optics by performing
an “Optics Clean” as outlined in the Maintenance section
of the software description.
Homogenizer - Weekly, clean the homogenizer probe as
outlined below.
Perform Check Standard - Monthly, perform a check
standardl.
External Balance - Monthly, verify the external balance
calibration using a 10-gram weight.
Air Intake Vents - Monthly, clean the air intake vents of
the instrument as required.
Homogenizer Bearings - Quarterly, replace the homog-
enizer bearings.
Optics Pump Tubing - Semi-annually, replace the optics
pump tubing.
Waste Pump Tubing - Semi-annually, replace the waste
pump tubing.
Water Inlet Filter - Semi-annually, replace the water inlet
fi lter.
Cleaning Procedures for the Sprint Homogenizer
Probe
The homogenizer probe should be thoroughly cleaned
weekly to remove any accumulated sample, solution and/
or debris.
WARNING
To prevent possible injury, use caution to prevent
touching the blade at the end of the homogenizer.
1. To remove the homogenizer probe from the Sprint
instrument, carefully push up on the probe, rotate ¼
turn counterclockwise and pull down.
2. Insert the open end of one of the cleaning tools into
the top of the homogenizer for stabilization.
3. Insert the closed end of the second cleaning tool into
the bottom of the homogenizer. Rotate the service tool
counterclockwise to remove the blade from the stator.
