1.1.1 Backplane
8665 Smart Router uses a dual bac kplane architecture, which allows that all the cards are accessible
from the front panel. The backside of the subrack has a metal cover and all the interface connectors
are located on the front side. The signal backplane itself is passive and only pro vides connectors
and signal paths for high speed data packet transfer. Power distribution an d low speed signaling
among the cards is handled by a separate backplane. The power backplane contains some passive
components for line termination, signal integrity purposes and the id enti cation EEPROM.
The backplane d ata transmission architecture is based on differential signals in which the swi tch
cards are the center points for a dual star topolog y in a redundan t conguration. There is also a
separate internal communication du a l s tar bus topology between the units in the NE. This sepa rat e
control bus assures that the NE internal control i s not lost ev en if the forw a rd ing plane network
processors have problems. The oth er bu ses are power, synchronization (clock ), fan module control
and unit p resence busses.
