1.5.2 Line Unit Redu ndancy
Ethernet Link Protection (ELP) or [IEEE 802.1AX ] Ethernet Link Aggregation (LAG) are applied
for protecting Ethernet physical interfaces. For more information see 8600 Smart Routers Ethernet

1.5.3 Switch Unit Redundancy
8665 Smart Router prov ides two slots for the switch units. With one switch unit th e network elem ent
is not red und ant in term s of traffic switching. With two switch units the network element is fully
redundant on the data and control plane switching. Also trafficisloadsharedtobothswitchunitsto
enhance the QoS beh avio r and reduce switchover time in case of failure.
1.5.4 Redundancy Termino logy
The following terminology is used in co nnection with redundancy.
Static ter ms:
• Working refers to the card with the higher slot number.
• Protecting refers to the card with the lower slot number.
Dynamic terms:
• Active refers to the card or interface actually doing its task.
• Passive refers to the card or interface that is not currently in perf or mance.
