1 8665 Smart Router Overview
1.3 8665 Smart Router Power Consumption
The typical and maximum p ower consumption values o f the 8665 Smart Router units an d m odu les
are dened in the 6 Technical Specications. These values are stored on the no n-volatile memories,
EEPROMs, of the units and modules. An estimation of the power consumption of a particular NE
installation is calculated as a sum of all the units and modules in the network element.
The network element software automatically calculates the sum of the power consumption values
from the EEPROMs o f the installed un its and modules in the network elem ent. The software then
compares the power consumption sum with the m axim um permissible power consumption or
cooling capacity (smaller value used by software) for the netwo rk element. If the maxim um
permissible power is exceeded, an alarm will be raised and no new units w ill be accepted into the
hw-inventory and thu s the usage of the units will not be allowed. Currently n o such congurations
exist for 86 65 Smart R o uter.
The factors affecting the po wer consumption are e.g.:
Equipping and conguration (and SFPs)
Activity level of the product
Supply voltage, bo th battery voltage and the actual operational voltag es of the integ rated circuits
Temperature, air ow, altitude and other environm ental factors
Different manufacturers integrated circuits for the same purpose
Aging o f components
Coriant has measured and evaluated the power consum ptions of the cards and the power capability
of the NEs and adjusted the element software in a way that only reliable installations are allowed
by the software.
The software calculates from the EEPROMs:
The sum of averages of the typical and maximum power consumption values for modules and
cards in LU1 and SU1 in 8665 Smart Router,
The sum of m axim um power consumption values of the Fan Modules,
For power inpu t mod ules (PIM), add the average of the typical an d maximu m power co nsum p-
tions of PIM to the NE power consumption sum only once, even though there are two PIMs in
the N E.
Power consumption values of the network elements are needed for different purposes in central
ofces and other telecommunications sites. To properly dimension systems and resources to support
the network elements in a sufcient but economically feasible way, the users of the 8600 prod ucts
may consider for what purpose they need the power consumption values and decide which value
they want to use fo r which purpose. The sum of typical pow er consumption values of the cards
and modules pop ulated in the NE presents the typical power consumption of the NE in m ost o f th e
cases. The w a y the element software calculates the po wer consumption of the NE (described above)
is a good value for the maximum p ower consumption with quite high probability. The sum of the
maximum power consumption valu es of the cards and modules is the theo retical absolute maximum
power consumption value for the NE, which should never realize with 8665 Smart Router.
