Custom Speed Tables For Your Decoder
Your EasyDCC Command Station comes with 8 custom speed tables that may be used with most
DCC decoders. A speed table is what the decoder uses to interpret and respond to throttle
commands. In other words, the speed table controls the speed at a specific speed step. With a
custom table, you can control exactly how fast, how slow the decoder moves at any of the
decoder’s 28 specific speed steps.
A neat feature of the EasyDCC Command Station is that you can download a new speed table to a
decoder using either the progamming track, or while the locomotive is on the mainline. It only
takes a couple of key pushes.
The 8 factory defined speed tables can be used as is or you may change them to suit your
railroad’s requirements. Any changes made to the speed table is permanently stored in the
Command Station. The table below shows the differences between the 8 default speed tables.
Table Type Max Speed Typical Locomotive Response
1 Linear 100% Reaches top speed much earlier than ormal
2 Linear 100% Reaches top speed somewhat earlier than normal
3 Linear 100% Normal speed
4 Linear 80% A bit slower than normal at less than top speed
5 Linear 70% More slowly than normal at less than top speed
6 Linear 60% Even more slower than normal at maximum
7 Linear 50% Only about half of normal speed at maximum
8 Linear 40% Very much slower than normal at maximum
Creating Custom Tables
Custom speed tables are created in the Command Station by storing a value representing a
specific speed in each of the 28 available speed step CVs. CV 67 is the first CV that corresponds
to speed step number 1. CV94 is the last CV which corresponds to speed step number 28. The
CVs can have any value so be careful. Crazy speed step CV values will create crazy locomotive
speeds.
The completed table is then programmed into the decoder’s matching CV values. Finally, the
decoder is programmed to use the custom speed table instead of its own.
The graph below shows a plot of 3 speed tables. Page 100 has a listing of the CV value for each
CV of the 8 factory speed tables.
