Mounting and Hookup Of The Throttle Bus Extender
If your system is using plug-in throttles, an Extender is used. This section can be skipped if an
Extender and/or coaxial throttle bus is not being used.
The Throttle Bus Extender circuit board, called an Extender for short, is used to drive coaxial
cable, called the TBUS, used by the plug-in throttle. You may also plug wireless Receivers into
the throttle bus.
The Extender is capable of driving about 100 feet of coaxial cable. The actual limit will be based
on the number of "breaks" in the cable (the point where a fascia plate is connected) and actual
distance between the Extender and the last plug-in throttle. If the Extender is only used to connect
to a wireless Receiver, the cable length may be increased to a total of 150 feet.
It is common for large layouts to use multiple Extenders. The hookup of multiple Extenders is in
the next section.
Mounting Considerations
AC Power for the Extender
The Extender requires a source of 12VAC at about 1A. CVP’s offers 12VAC transformer rated at
1.5 Amps which is perfect for the task. This same transformer also provides power to plug-in
throttles connected to the TBUS. You may use our transformer or your own. For best operation,
attach the Extender transformer to the same plug strip used for the Command Station
transformer. Do not attempt to use the Command Station’s AC power transformer to power the
Extender - it is too small for the job.
CVP’s Extender is designed to mount under the layout near the Command Station. Do not allow
any metal objects to contact the circuit board or connectors.
Never allow the circuit board bottom or the heatsink fins to contact metal. The heatsinks become
warm during normal operation. Keep them away from plastic and metal. Always leave sufficient
room around the heatsink fins for air circulation. A small piece of plywood or masonite may be
used as a base. Use wood screws, threaded mounting posts, or nuts and bolts to attach the
Extender to the base.
