Adjusting The Track Voltage
37
DCPS120 Booster Power Supply
The DCPS120 power supply has a universal AC input. It can
use an AC line voltage that ranges from a low of about 100V
up to a maximum of about 240 volts.
Output Voltage Setting
The small slide switch sets the output voltage. The range is 15V to 24 volts. The markings are not
exactly coincident with the proper switch setting. It may be easier to just count the clicks to reach
the desired setting.
Maximum Output Current Is Based On Selected Voltage
There is a total of 120 Watts available and that is a fixed amount. The maximum available current
is based on the selected output voltage using the formula of Power (watts) divided by output
voltage and the answer is in Amps. For example, at 15V, the available current is 120 divided by 15
which is 8 amps. The higher the output voltage, the lower is the available current. The table below
shows the output current vs the selected voltage.
Maximum Power (Watts) Output Voltage Maximum Current (Amps)
120 15 8.0 A
120 16 7.5 A
120 18 6.7 A
120 19 6.3 A
120 20 6.0 A
120 22 5.5 A
120 24 5.0 A
Using 3rd Party Power Supplies
For lower voltage applications, you can purchase any power supply that has the following
specifications: DC output voltage that meets your needs, a regulated DC output, 3% regulation or
better, maximum output current equal to your needs, capable of sustaining 30 Amp surge without
shutting down.
The ZoneMaster booster uses a standard DC power connector with a 2mm
pin and is shown to the right. Make sure your power supply comes with a
plug that matches this connector.
Using Series Diodes To Lower The Voltage
Standard silicon power diodes can also be used to lower the track voltage. Each diode will
subtract about 1 volt from the peak track voltage. Be sure to use them in sets of two connected as
shown. Also, make sure they are rated to handle the output current of the ZoneMaster booster or
ZoneShare. The average or continuous rating should be a minimum of 10A with a reverse voltage
rating of greater than 30 volts. A lower current diode will work but it might be damaged if there is
a short circuit and the ZoneMaster can output its full 7 amps.
