Programming Decoder Configuration-Variable #11 (CV11)
The acronym CV is short for “configuration variable.” A decoder has many CVs that affect how it
works. A CV permanently stores a value that you program into the decoder. For example, sound
decoders have the most CVs since there are many options for how they perform. Programming a
decoder CV with a number is easy. The same keystrokes are used for any CV supported by the
decoder.
The following step-by-step example will program CV11 to a value of zero. This CV tells the
locomotive decoder what to do if it loses the DCC signal. The value of zero tells the decoder to
simply keep running with the last known motion command.
We strongly recommend programming CV11 to zero in all of your decoders. You should
do this right after programming their address.

If you don’t have a programming track booster installed and you
are programming sound decoders, you may see this message first.
Just key in a 3 to continue on. If you have the programming track
booster, the 2nd message will appear.
mCV, Tells the Command Station you want to program a CV.
m1, m1, mENT Tells the Command Station which CV.
This message is asking you what you will be doing to CV11. The
second line is lists some keys what the will select. For a decoder,
writing to it means programming it. So push the 1 key to select
“Rite” which is a shortened version of “write.”

The next message is asking what kind of number is to be written
(programmed) into CV11. For now, push the 1 key to indicate that a
“Valu” will be used (valu is an abbreviation fo value which means a
regular numeric entry. There is more detail about the other option in
the advanced topics section.

Now, the command station is waiting for you to key in the desired value for CV11. For this CV,
the value will always be zero. Push the 0 key to enter the value and push the ENT key to indicate
you are done completing entries.
