3-2. This se cti on provides operating i nformation fo r the 53 15 A/ B Un iver sa l Counter. Descrip-
tions of all front panel control s, connedors, and ind icators as we ll as an operator's check, oper-
at ing in structions, a nd operator's ma in te na nce are prov ided.
3-3. OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS
3-4. The 5315A/B is a 100 M H z/ 100 ns full universa l counter, capable of Frequency, Period, Tim e
Interval, Ratio, a nd Totalize type mea su remen ts. To maxim i ze resol ution, the 5315A/ 8 uses a
recipr
oc al counting techn iqu e for frequencies be l ow 10 M Hz, automatically sw i tc hin g to co n-
ve ntional frequenc y cou nting fo r fr eque nci es a bo ve 10 M Hz. The gate t im e is co n tinuous ly
adju
sta ble fr om 50 ms to 10 s, via th e fr ont panel. The internal mic ro compute r performs the calcu-
lation
s, and au tomatic ally compensates f or the arb itr ary gate time. The display is given in en gi -
neering notati on (Le., exponents of blank 0, ±3, ±6, or ±9 ). The in put amplifiers are optimized
for both t im e i nte rval and frequency mea su remen ts. The fo ll owing paragraphs desc ribe t he
powe r-up char ac teristics and operating modes of the 5315 A/ B.
3-5. POWER-UP SELF CHECK
3-6. When the 5315 A/B is turned on , a po wer -up reset and se lf- check cycle is au tomatic ally
i ni tiated. This is approximately a 2-second cycle, indicated by th e fo ll ow in g display:

3 -7 . Dur ing this cycle, th e mic rocomp uter perform s a check su m of the int ernal program in
ROM and a bi t pattern is written i nto and read f rom RAM. Addit ionally, a partial check of the
M RC a nd 1/ 0 ports is per formed . Any failure during the cycle w ill prod u ce a number ed error
message, momentarily d is pla ye d, and will la tch the ERROR a nnun icator ON . Refer to Error
