2 System Board
Devices on the PCI Bus
of five internal wide-SCSI hard drives are supported.
By default, the internal SCSI bus is configured to run in Ultra-SCSI mode
(providing a maximum band-width of 40 MB/s). The user may configure the
SCSI system using the SCSISelect utility, included in the system BIOS. This
utility is described in more detail in the User’s Guide.
SCSI-configured-automatically (SCAM) support is provided at level 2, for
Plug and Play. However, hot swap is not supported. The controller is BBS
compliant.
The Ultra-wide SCSI controller and cable supports RAIDport PCI devices
such as the HP FastRAID solution (refer to page 38
).
AIC-7860 Narrow (8-bit)
SCSI controller
The Adaptec AIC-7860 Narrow SCSI PCI controller is integrated on the
system board. The data transfer rate is 20 MB/s on an 8-bit single-ended bus.
It is fitted with a 8-bit SCSI cable with three connectors. It offers the features
as the Ultra-wide SCSI except that it may not be used to support RAIDport
PCI devices. It is recommended to attach SCSI devices that are slower with
respect to SCSI HDDs to this 8-bit SCSI interface. In general, the 8-bit SCSI
or IDE interfaces are recommended for CD-ROM drives, and the 16-bit SCSI
interface for hard disk drives. The external SCSI port is handled by the 8-bit
SCSI controller.
NOTE Although the 16-bit SCSI interface is known as the “Wide SCSI”, its cable is
actually narrower in physical terms than that of the 8-bit “Narrow” SCSI
interface.
Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE)
The IDE controller is implemented as part of the PIIX4 chip (the PCI/ISA
bridge). It is driven from the PCI bus, and has PCI-Master capability. It
supports “Ultra-33” Synchronous DMA mode transfers up to 33 MB/s, and
Standard IDE. To use the “Ultra-33” features the drives must be compliant
with “Ultra-33”.
The IDE controller supports two devices (one master and one slave)
connected to a single channel. The channel is fitted with an IDE cable with
two connectors.
