The document describes the SuperStor Ultra Indirect Fired Water Heaters, manufactured by Heat Transfer Products, Inc. These heaters are designed for both residential and commercial applications, providing hot water by utilizing a boiler as the heat source. The core function of the SuperStor Ultra is to efficiently transfer heat from a boiler's hot water to domestic cold water, storing it for on-demand use.
Function Description:
The SuperStor Ultra operates as an indirect fired water heater, meaning it does not have its own burner. Instead, it uses a heat exchanger coil to transfer heat from an external boiler's hot water loop to the domestic water stored within the tank. This design allows for efficient operation by leveraging the existing heating system of a building. The boiler circulates hot water through the cupronickel coil assembly inside the SuperStor Ultra tank. As the boiler water flows through the coil, it heats the surrounding domestic water in the stainless steel tank. A thermostat well, factory-installed, houses the control element that monitors the tank's water temperature and signals the boiler to provide heat when needed. This system ensures a continuous supply of hot water for various domestic and commercial needs. The units are designed to minimize heat loss, featuring 5.08 cm (2 inches) of polyurethane foam insulation, resulting in less than 28°C (50°F) per hour heat loss (R17).

Usage Features:
- Installation Sequence: Follow the provided instructions to ensure safety and minimize interferences.
- Location: Centralized to piping, protected from freezing temperatures, and with easy access to controls, drain, and inlets/outlets. Must be installed indoors, vertically, and on a level surface.
- Safety Precautions:
- DANGER: Avoid installing near flammable liquids (Gasoline, Adhesives, Solvents, Paint Thinners, Butane, Liquefied Propane, etc.) as controls could ignite vapors.
- CAUTION: Risk of scald injury increases with higher water temperatures. A temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve is mandatory.
- WARNING: Never use dielectric unions or galvanized steel fittings on domestic water connections; only copper or brass fittings with Teflon thread sealant.
- Plumbing: All plumbing must comply with local and state codes. Use thread tape and pipe dope on all mechanical connections.
- Boiler Connections: Use 1" nominal minimum tube size for boiler supply and return. Connect boiler supply to circulator outlet, and circulator inlet to boiler's "HOT OUTLET." Ensure circulator arrow faces flow direction. Boiler return connects to boiler's return side. Install flow check or swing check valve before return pipe from tank. For steam boilers, tank supply must be below minimum water level; install strainer and drain valve.
- Cold Water Inlet: Install an NPT brass tee with a brass drain valve on the run and an NPT male X ¾" (minimum) tube adapter in the branch. A shut-off valve is recommended. A backflow preventer or thermal expansion tank may be required depending on local codes and system configuration.
- Domestic Hot Water Outlet: Install an NPT brass tee with an NPT brass T&P valve (long element) for hot water storage tanks. The T&P valve must meet ANSI Z212B-1984 standards and be sized to the heater's BTU/Hour and storage capacity. The discharge line must terminate at least 6" above a drain and not contact electrical parts.
- Control Settings: Boiler high limit should be at least 20°F higher than the SuperStor Ultra temperature. Set boiler low limit to minimum to satisfy tank control. Differential should be 10-15°F. Recommended temperature setting is 119°F, or as per local/state codes. A mixing valve can be used for high-demand applications (spas, hot tubs, whirlpools) with higher temperature settings.
- Wiring: All wiring must comply with local and state codes. Turn off power during wiring. A disconnect switch between boiler control and water heater is recommended.
- Sizing: Charts are provided to optimize boiler sizing based on desired hot water output and flow rates. Continuous flow performance calculation is also provided.
Maintenance Features:
- T&P Relief Valve: The valve lever MUST be operated AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR by the owner to ensure waterways are clear. If no water flows, replacement is required.
- T&P Relief Valve Reinspection: Valves should be inspected and replaced if necessary by a licensed plumbing contractor or qualified service technician AT LEAST ONCE EVERY THREE YEARS. Do not attempt self-inspection. Failure to reinspect can lead to unsafe temperature/pressure buildup and serious injury or property damage.
- Draining: If draining the SuperStor Ultra is necessary, open the T&P valve or a hot water tap to prevent vacuum buildup.
- Strainer and Drain Valve (Steam Boilers): For steam boilers, a strainer and drain valve should be installed for periodic draining of scale and sludge.
