• Systematicallychecktheentireengineforlooseandmissinghardware.At-
tempttoshakecomponentsbyhand,suchasthealternatorandthemotor
mounts.Ifaloosenessproblemexists,itisimportanttoseeanauthorized
ILMORdealer.
Because this process should be completed while the engine is cool (in order to avoid burns), it is
recommended that this check be completed prior to starting the engine.
• EnsuretheengineisOFFandtheenginesafetystartingswitchisdisconnected.Leave
thethrottle/shiftcontrolleverinneutral.Opentheenginecompartmentand
locatethethrottle/shiftcables.
• Followeachcablebackunderthefloorboardsandfeelforanykinksorwear
ontheouterjacket.Anysignofcabledamageiscauseforimmediatereplace-
ment.SeeanauthorizedILMORdealerforassistance.
These inspections should initially be done before the engine has been started. Recognize that this
is a preliminary inspection only and care should be taken throughout the boating experience to be
alert for any signs of fuel or exhaust leaks.
• EnsuretheengineisOFFandtheenginesafetystartingswitchisdisconnect-
ed.Opentheenginecompartmentandvisuallycheckasmuchofthefueland
exhaustsystemsaspossible.
• Ifatanytimeduringoperationthatthereisanunexplainedodor,orifanyone
on-boardshowssignsofunexplaineddrowsinessorsleepiness,immediately
shutdowntheengineanddetermineiftheodororunexplainedbehavioris
theresultofmalfunctionsinthefuelorexhaustsystems.
As the boat is started, check all gauges but pay particular attention to the voltmeter.
Whenstartingtheengine,checkthatthevoltmeterreadsbetween12.8and14volts
onthevoltmeter.Anerraticreadingcanbeasignoflowvoltage.Thevoltmeteristhebest
indicationofthestateofthebattery.However,itisnotfool-proof.Whilethereadingwill
indicatethatthebatteryisproducingcurrent,ifinapreviousoutingtherewasreasonto
suspectaproblemwiththebattery(ies),checkwithanauthorizedILMORdealer.
Manyboatmodelsareequippedwithalow-voltagebatteryalarm.Thissystemmay
alsoturnoffaccessorieswhenthevoltmeterfallstoacertainpre-setlevel.Theobjective
