Youcansetapower-onpasswordtohelpprotectyourcomputeragainstunauthorizedaccess.
Ifyousetapower-onpassword,thepasswordpromptisdisplayedonthescreenwheneveryouturnonthe
computer.Youmustenterthecorrectpasswordtostartusingthecomputer.
Setting,changing,orremovingapower-onpassword
Beforeyoustart,printtheseinstructions.
Toset,change,orremoveapower-onpassword,dothefollowing:
1.Turnoffyourcomputer.Waitforaboutveseconds,andthenturnonthecomputeragain.
2.Whenthelogoscreenisdisplayed,pressF1tostarttheThinkPadSetupprogram.
3.SelectSecurity➙Password➙Power-onPasswordbyusingthedirectionalkeys.
4.Dependingonyourneed,dooneofthefollowing:
•Tosetapassword,dothefollowing:
a.IntheEnterNewPasswordeld,typeadesiredpasswordandpressEnter.
b.IntheConrmNewPasswordeld,retypethepasswordandpressEnter.
•Tochangeapassword,dothefollowing:
a.IntheEnterCurrentPasswordeld,typethecurrentpower-onpasswordandpressEnter.
b.IntheEnterNewPasswordeld,typethenewpower-onpasswordandpressEnter;thenretype
thepasswordintheConrmNewPasswordeldandPressEnter.
•Toremoveapassword,dothefollowing:
a.IntheEnterCurrentPasswordeld,typethecurrentpower-onpasswordandpressEnter.
b.LeavetheEnterNewPasswordandConrmNewPasswordeldsblank.PressEntertwice.
5.ASetupNoticewindowisdisplayed.PressEntertocontinue.
6.PressF10.ASetupConrmationwindowisdisplayed.SelectYestosavethecongurationchanges
andexit.
Note:Youmightwanttorecordyourpasswordandstoreitinasafeplace.Otherwise,ifyouforgetthe
password,youhavetotakeyourcomputertoaLenovoreselleroramarketingrepresentativetohave
thepasswordcanceled.
Harddiskpasswords
Twotypesofharddiskpasswordshelpprotecttheinformationstoredontheharddiskdrive:
•Userharddiskpassword
•Masterharddiskpassword,whichrequiresauserharddiskpassword
Ifauserharddiskpasswordhasbeenset,butnomasterharddiskpasswordhasbeen,theusermustenter
theuserharddiskpasswordinordertogainaccesstolesandsontheharddiskdrive.
Themasterpasswordcanbesetandusedonlybyasystemadministrator.Likeamasterkey,itenablesthe
administratortogetaccesstoanyharddiskdriveinasystem.Theadministratorsetsthemasterpassword;
nooneelseknowsit.Thentheadministratorsetsauserpasswordforeachcomputerinthenetwork,and
tellseachuserthepasswordforhisorhercomputer.Theusercanthenchangetheuserpasswordas
desired,buttheadministratorstillcangetaccessbyusingthemasterpassword.
