Overview

This document describes the Lutron DS-2013SD Noise Dosimeter, a personal sound exposure meter with real-time datalogging capabilities. It is designed to meet IEC 61672 class 2 standards for frequency and time weighting, and IEC 61252 for personal sound exposure.

Function Description

The DS-2013SD is a versatile instrument that combines the functions of a dose meter, data-logger, and sound level meter. It measures % Noise Dose, Exposure Time, and Sound Level. The device features a real-time datalogger with a built-in clock and calendar, allowing for real-time data recording with sampling times configurable from 1 second to 3600 seconds. A manual datalogger function is also available (sampling time set to 0 seconds).

A key innovation is its ease of data transfer: after datalogging, users can simply remove the SD card and plug it into a computer. The measured values, along with time information (year/month/date, hour/minute/second), can be directly downloaded to Excel for further data or graphic analysis without needing extra software.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Circuit: Custom one-chip microprocessor LSI circuit.
  • Display: LCD size 50mm x 30mm, dot-matrix with green backlight (ON/OFF).
  • Measurement Type: SPL (Sound Pressure Level) and Dose (test noise exposure).
  • Measurement Range:
    • SPL: Auto 30 - 130 dB.
    • Dose: 70 - 130 dB.
  • Resolution: 0.1 dB.
  • Functions: dB (A & C frequency weighting), Time weighting (Fast, Slow), Data hold, Record (Max., Min.).
  • Accuracy (23 ±5 °C): Characteristics of "A" frequency weighting network meet IEC 61672 class 2. Under 94 dB input signal, accuracy varies by frequency: ±3.0 dB at 31.5 Hz, ±2.0 dB at 63 Hz, ±1.5 dB at 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, ±1.0 dB at 1 KHz, ±2.0 dB at 2 KHz, ±3.0 dB at 4 KHz, and ±5.0 dB at 8 KHz. (Tested under RF Field Strength less than 3 V/M & frequency less than 30 MHz only).
  • Frequency Weighting Network:
    • A weighting: Simulates "Human Ear Listening" response, typically used for environmental sound level measurement.
    • C weighting: Near "FLAT" response, suitable for checking machinery noise (Q.C. check) and determining sound pressure level of tested equipment.
  • Time Weighting (Fast & Slow):
    • Fast (t = 125 ms): Simulates human ear response time weighting.
    • Slow (t = 1 s): Easier to get average values of vibration sound level.
  • Threshold Level (Thr): 70~90 dB in 1 dB steps.
  • Criterion Level (Crit): 80, 84, 85, 90 dB.
  • Exchange Rate: 3, 4, 5, or 6 dB.
  • Frequency: 31.5 to 8,000 Hz.
  • Microphone: Electric condenser microphone, 12.7 mm DIA. (1/2 inch).
  • Calibration: Built-in external calibration VR for 94 dB level adjustment. Calibrated via external SOUND CALIBRATOR (SC-942, optional) or B & K (Bruel & kjaer) MULTIFUNCTION ACOUSTIC CALIBRATOR Type 4226.
  • Datalogger Sampling Time Setting Range: Auto (1 second to 3600 seconds), Manual (0 second).
  • Memory Device: Internal EEPROM (records 16,000 items). External SD memory card (1 GB to 16 GB, AC Adapter only).
  • Data Error: ≤ 0.1% of total saved data typically.
  • Data Output: RS232/USB PC computer interface. Optional RS232 cable (UPCB-02) and USB cable (USB-01) available.
  • Power Supply: UM4/AAA (1.5 V) x 6 batteries or DC 9V adapter (optional).
  • Power Current: Normal operation (w/o SD card save data and LCD Backlight OFF): Approx. DC 16 mA. When "SD" save data but LCD Backlight OFF: Approx. DC 35 mA. If LCD backlight ON, power consumption increases approx. DC 8 mA.
  • Dimensions: 132 x 80 x 32 mm (5.2 x 3.1 x 1.3 inch).
  • Weight: 250 g / 0.55 LB. (without battery).
  • Operating Temperature: 0 to 50 °C.
  • Operating Humidity: Less than 85% R.H.
  • Patents: Germany (Nr. 20 2008 016 337.4), Japan (3151214), Taiwan (M 358970, M 359043), China (ZL 2008 2 0189918.5, ZL 2008 2 0189917.0), USA (Patent pending).

Usage Features

  • Easy Operation: The meter is designed for innovation and easy operation, eliminating the need for extra software setup.
  • User-Defined Configurations: Selectable Criterion Level, Exchange Rate, Threshold, Frequency Weighting, and Response Time settings allow for customized measurements.
  • Data Hold: Freezes the current measurement value on the display.
  • Data Record (Max., Min. reading): Records maximum and minimum readings during a measurement session.
  • LCD Backlight: Automatically lights up upon power ON and can be toggled ON/OFF manually.
  • Datalogger Functionality:
    • Auto Datalogger: Records data at set sampling intervals (1 to 3600 seconds).
    • Manual Datalogger: Saves data one time with each button push (sampling time set to 0 seconds).
    • SD Card Data Structure: Organizes logged data into folders (e.g., SLD01, SLD02) and Excel files (e.g., SLD01001.XLS) with up to 30,000 columns per file.
    • Decimal Point Setting: Allows selection of decimal character (USA "." or EURO ",") for SD card data.
  • Advanced Settings: Includes options to set clock time (Year/Month/Date, Hour/Minute/Second), sampling time, auto power OFF management, beeper sound ON/OFF, decimal point for SD card, SD memory card format, and frequency weighting (A or C).
  • Power ON/OFF: Auto shut-off saves battery life, or manual off by push button.
  • Microphone with Clip: Included for convenient placement.
  • Hanging Unit: Included for easy mounting.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Replacement: An indicator on the LCD signals when battery replacement is necessary. The device uses 6 UM4/AAA 1.5V batteries.
  • System Reset: A reset switch (3-13, Fig. 1) is provided to fix CPU system hold-ups or other troubles by resetting the circuit system.
  • SD Card Formatting: The meter allows formatting of the SD card. It is recommended to format new SD cards with the meter and to reformat cards previously used with other devices to prevent data loss.
