Overview

This document outlines the assembly, operation, and maintenance of the Master Forge Dual Tray Charcoal Grill, Model #MFJ576PNC. This charcoal grill is designed for outdoor use only and requires two people for safe assembly due to its weight and the potential for sharp edges on some parts. Protective gloves are recommended during assembly.

Function Description

The Master Forge Dual Tray Charcoal Grill is a charcoal-fired outdoor cooking appliance. Its primary function is to grill food using charcoal as the fuel source. A key feature of this grill is its adjustable charcoal tray, which can be raised or lowered using a crank handle. This adjustability allows users to control the heat intensity, making it suitable for various cooking needs and temperatures. The grill is equipped with two charcoal trays, allowing for flexible charcoal placement and heat management. It also includes a warming rack for keeping cooked food warm.

Usage Features

  • Adjustable Charcoal Tray: The grill features an adjustable charcoal tray that can be moved up or down via a crank handle. This allows for precise control over the distance between the charcoal and the cooking grates, thereby regulating the cooking temperature. For optimal performance and safety, it is not recommended to raise a fully loaded charcoal tray higher than the middle height setting.
  • Dual Charcoal Trays: The presence of two charcoal trays offers flexibility in setting up different heat zones or managing charcoal quantities for extended cooking.
  • Temperature Control: In addition to the adjustable charcoal tray, the grill is equipped with side air vents on the main body and a smoke stack with an adjustable handle. Opening these vents increases airflow and temperature, while closing them reduces it. The temperature should not exceed 500°F; if it does, the quantity of briquettes should be reduced.
  • Warming Rack: A warming rack is included to keep food warm after cooking, ensuring that all items are ready to serve at the same time.
  • Charcoal Lighting Instructions:
    1. Open the grill top and remove the cooking grates.
    2. Adjust the charcoal tray to the center position.
    3. Place one even row of charcoal briquettes in the charcoal tray, ensuring they do not go above the top of the tray.
    4. Light the briquettes.
    5. Move the charcoal tray to the bottom position.
    6. With the top open, allow the briquettes to fully ignite until there is no further flame.
    7. Once lit, place the grates back in the grill.
    8. Adjust the charcoal tray as needed to achieve the desired temperature.
    9. Keep the two side air vents on the lid open during cooking for proper airflow.
  • Front Door Operation: The grill includes front doors for accessing the charcoal. To open, lift slightly and pull. To close, lift slightly and push until it catches the door frame.
  • Fuel Source: While charcoal is recommended, wood or a combination of charcoal and wood can be used as a fuel source, provided it is placed and ignited on the charcoal pan. Do not build fires that are too large; start with no more than 2 lbs. of charcoal (approximately 30 briquettes) per tray and add more as needed.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
    • Use outdoors only in well-ventilated areas.
    • Do not operate near or under flammable/combustible materials (minimum 36 inches clearance from sides, back, and overhead construction).
    • Do not use as a heater.
    • Operate on a stable, level, non-flammable surface (asphalt, concrete, solid ground).
    • Wear protective gloves during assembly to avoid sharp edges.
    • Do not use this product for commercial purposes or in recreational vehicles/boats.
    • Do not store near gasoline or other combustible liquids/vapors.
    • Store in a dry, protected location inaccessible to children and pets.
    • Never leave unattended while in use or while ashes are hot.
    • Do not move the unit while in use or while ashes are hot.
    • Never use gasoline or other highly volatile fluids as a starter.
    • Always cook food on the grate after the flame has burned out.
    • Dispose of cold ashes by wrapping them in heavy-duty aluminum foil and placing in a noncombustible container. If disposing of hot ashes, soak them completely with water in heavy-duty foil within a noncombustible container.
    • Allow the unit to cool completely before cleaning or maintenance.
    • Most surfaces are hot when in use; use extreme caution and keep others away.
    • Always wear protective clothing.
    • Never substitute gasoline, kerosene, or alcohol for charcoal starter. Paraffin-based starter cubes can be used where charcoal starter is prohibited. Never use charcoal starter fluid with an electric starter.

Maintenance Features

  • Seasoning the Unit (Before First Use):
    1. Remove all retail hangtags, but keep safety markings.
    2. Place about 30 briquettes in each charcoal tray, avoiding contact with the pan walls.
    3. Coat interior surfaces with vegetable cooking oil.
    4. Light briquettes and set the ash pan at medium height using the crank handle.
    5. Sustain a burn for about two hours with the lid closed and all dampers 1/4 open.
    6. Allow the unit to cool down properly.
    7. Once completed, the unit is ready for use. This process enhances cooking performance and durability, preventing metallic flavors in food.
  • Regular Cleaning: The frequency of cleaning depends on usage. Ensure coals are completely extinguished and grates are cooled before cleaning.
    • Interior: Wipe with a cloth or paper towel.
    • Grates: Clean with warm water and pat dry. The porcelain coating is fragile, so handle with care; do not knock, hit, or drop the grates. Do not cool hot grates with cold water, as this may cause cracking.
    • Exterior: May require occasional touch-up with commercially available black high-temperature spray paint.
    • Rust Prevention: Maintaining a light coating of vegetable oil on interior surfaces helps protect against rust.
  • Ash Disposal: The adjustable charcoal tray also facilitates easy cleaning of the firebox interior once the unit has cooled. Dispose of cold ashes by wrapping them in heavy-duty aluminum foil and placing them in a noncombustible container, ensuring no other combustible materials are present. If ashes must be disposed of before completely cooling, remove them in heavy-duty foil and soak them thoroughly with water before placing them in a noncombustible container.
  • NEVER PAINT THE INTERIOR OF THE UNIT!
