Chapter 8: Exhaust
79
The exhaust system is a frequently overlooked compo-
nent of an engine. It is important to make sure the muf-
fler is in good condition and free of debris and/or
insects.
NOTE: A blocked muffler will result in poor per-
formance. If a muffler is completely blocked the
engine may not start.
The MTD engine uses one of two different mufflers; a
standard muffler covered here or a catalytic converter
muffler that will be covered later in this chapter.
To remove/replace the conventional muffler
1. Remove the muffler cover that is secured to the
cylinder head by removing the two nuts using a
10mm wrench. See Figure 8.1.

these nuts
2. Slide the muffler off of the studs. See Figure 8.2.
NOTE: The muffler gasket extends well beyond
the port, to act as a heat shield and guides cool-
ing air between the muffler and the cylinder.
See Figure 8.3.
NOTE: The exhaust gasket is made of a graph-
ite material. It will stick to the sealing surfaces
when pressure is applied, tearing when pressure
is relieved. The gasket can only be used one
time.
