1.Setparkingbrakeandshifttransmissiontoparkorneutral.
CAUTION
Topreventdamagetotheengine,donotdepress
theacceleratorpedal.
2.Depressclutchpedalifequipped.
3.TurnignitionswitchtoONtoactivatethecoldstartassist
/inletairheatersystem.TheWAITTOSTARTlampwill
illuminatecontinuously.Donotcrankenginewhilelampis
oncontinuously.
NOTE:TheECMnormallydoesnotenergizetheinletair
heaterelementduringhotstarts.However,theECMsenses
reducedatmosphericpressureathighaltitudeandcould
energizetheairheaterelementduringhotstarts.
4.WhentheWAITTOSTARTlampbeginsashing,turn
ignitionswitchtoSTART.Ifthevehiclehaspushbutton
starting,pressandholdstarterbutton.
5.Whentheenginestarts,releasetheignitionswitchorstarter
button.TheignitionswitchwillreturntoONandtheengine
willcontinuetorun.
6.Withthetransmissioninneutral,releaseclutchpedalif
equipped.
7.Untiloilpressureisachieved,theenginewillnotaccelerate
andtheWAITTOSTARTlampwillash.
CAUTION
Iftheenginefailstostartwithin30seconds,to
preventdamagetotheengine,dothefollowing:
•TurnignitionswitchtoOFFandwait2-3
minutes.
•RepeatSteps1through5.
•Ifafterthreeattemptstheenginedoesnotstart,
determinethecause.
•Ifstartingattemptsarecontinued,thestarter
motorcanbedamaged.
8.Lowidlespeedis700rpm(nonadjustable).Extendedidling
periodsshouldbeavoided.SeeExtendedIdlingPeriodsin
thissection.Checkallgaugesduringwarm-up.
9.Within20secondsafterenginestart,engineoilpressure
shouldexceed15psi(103kPa).
CAUTION
Topreventenginedamage–donotincrease
enginespeeduntiloilpressuregaugeindicates
above15psi(103kPa).Ifoilpressuredoesnot
reachtheminimumlimitwithin20seconds,shut
downtheengine.
