Overview

This document describes the NETUM barcode scanner, providing information on its features, connectivity options, and programming capabilities.

Function Description

The NETUM barcode scanner is a versatile device designed for efficient barcode reading and data collection. It supports various connection modes, allowing it to integrate seamlessly with different host devices such as computers, smartphones, and tablets. The scanner is capable of reading a wide range of barcode types and offers flexible configuration options to suit diverse operational needs.

The core function of the scanner is to capture barcode data, which can then be transmitted to a host device. It features a scanning window for barcode acquisition, a power button for turning the device on/off, and a trigger button to initiate scanning. Indicator lights provide visual feedback on battery status, read success, and Bluetooth connection status. An integrated beeper provides audible feedback for various operations. For portability, it includes a lanyard eyelet and a pin for charging.

The scanner's firmware version can be displayed by scanning a specific barcode, ensuring users can verify their device's software status. Barcode programming is a key feature, allowing users to customize settings by scanning special command barcodes provided in the manual. These settings cover aspects like connection modes, keyboard languages, working modes, idle time, case conversion, beep volume, and function key mapping.

Usage Features

The NETUM scanner offers multiple connectivity options to cater to different user environments:

1. Working Via USB Cable: This is a plug-and-play option for devices using a US keyboard. Users simply connect the scanner to their device via a USB cable. For other keyboard types, the keyboard language needs to be configured by scanning the appropriate barcode. In this mode, the scanner's transmission is simulated as USB keyboard input (HID-KBW), meaning no additional drivers are required. Alternatively, it can function as a USB COM Port Emulation, allowing the device to receive data as a serial port.

2. Working Via USB Dongle (Wireless Mode): For wireless operation, users plug a USB dongle into their computer. Similar to the USB cable connection, it's plug-and-play for US keyboards, with language configuration needed for other types. The default mode for the USB dongle is HID-KBW, simulating keyboard input. It can also be configured for USB COM Port Emulation, enabling data reception as a serial port. This mode is activated by scanning the "Wireless Transmit" barcode.

3. Working Via Bluetooth: The scanner can connect to devices via Bluetooth. To initiate this, users scan the "Working via Bluetooth" barcode to enable pairing. The default keyboard is US, and other languages require configuration. Important notes for Bluetooth usage include ensuring the device is in range, pressing the scan button to connect, and observing the blue light for connection status (solid blue indicates a successful connection). If a connection fails after several attempts, the scanner emits a long beep. Users can switch between Bluetooth and RF Wireless channels by scanning the respective command barcodes.

Bluetooth Modes: The scanner supports three Bluetooth modes:

  • Basic Mode (HID) (default): This mode requires no software installation and connects to most devices, interacting like a keyboard.
  • Application Mode (Apple Specific Serial Profile): Designed for iOS devices, this mode is used when an iOS application supports NETUM scanners.
  • Application Mode (Serial Port Profile): Suitable for Android or Windows devices, this mode requires software installation and is recommended for applications that support it. Users can switch between these modes by scanning the corresponding command barcodes. To shift from SPP or BLE to HID mode, users must ignore/delete "Netum Bluetooth," turn off Bluetooth, scan the HID command barcode, then open Bluetooth and re-pair.

Transmission Speed Via Bluetooth Connection: The Bluetooth transmission speed can be adjusted to High, Medium (default), or Low by scanning specific barcodes, allowing users to optimize performance based on their needs.

Working Modes: The scanner offers different working modes:

  • Normal Mode (default): Data is transmitted immediately after scanning.
  • Store Mode: If the scanner is outside the Bluetooth signal range, it can store scanned data in its buffer memory. This data is permanently saved until manually uploaded to the working station. Users can output stored data or the total entry count, and clear the memory as needed.

Idle Time: Users can configure the idle time before the scanner goes to sleep, with options for 0 minutes, 10 minutes, or 30 minutes, or to power off completely. This helps conserve battery life.

Convert Case: The scanner can convert the case of scanned data. Options include disabling case conversion (default), swapping upper and lower case, converting all to upper case, or converting all to lower case.

Beep Volume: The beep volume can be adjusted to High (default), Low, or Mute, providing flexibility for different working environments.

Function Key Mapping: When enabled, function characters are sent over the keypad, which can be useful for specific applications. This feature can be enabled or disabled.

LED Activity/Beep Pattern/Indication: The manual provides detailed tables outlining the LED activity, beep patterns, and indications for different events across 2.4G RF Wireless Connection, Bluetooth Connection, and Charge Power modes. This helps users understand the scanner's status at a glance. For example, a blue LED ON and then OFF with a single beep indicates a successful scan in normal mode, while a red LED flashing three times with three beeps signifies data transmit failure.

Maintenance Features

The NETUM scanner is designed for user-friendly maintenance and troubleshooting. The programming capabilities allow users to reconfigure the device easily without requiring specialized tools or software, beyond scanning barcodes.

Troubleshooting and Support: The manual includes a FAQ section to address common issues:

  • Unreadable Barcodes: If barcodes are dirty, unclear, or if a specific barcode type is not commonly used and its setting is off by default, the scanner might not read them. Users are advised to contact support or download the full manual from the official website to activate specific symbologies.
  • Changing Terminator to TAB: Instructions for this can be found in the "Terminator configuration" section of the full manual.
  • Prefix & Suffix: Barcodes for applying or removing prefixes and suffixes are detailed in the full manual under the "prefix and suffix" section, or users can contact customer service.
  • Messy Code with Foreign Languages: The default language is English. Users can refer to "Keyboard Language" in the manual to change it for other foreign languages.
  • Italy Pharmacy Code: If the scanner cannot read Italy Pharmacy code, users should download the full manual, refer to the Code32 section, and scan "Enable Code32."
  • Add-on 2 or 5 Codes: For issues with add-on 2 or 5 codes, users should consult the full manual's "ADD-On code" section and scan the appropriate command barcode.
  • Datamatrix GS1 Format: If Datamatrix GS1 is not read in the correct format, scanning "Enable Function Key Mapping" from the manual will enable the scanner to output group separators.

Downloads: The manual states that this is a quick setup guide for models C750, C990, and C740. A full manual for these models is available for download from the official NETUM website: https://www.netum.net/. This ensures users have access to comprehensive information for advanced configurations and troubleshooting.

Contact Information: For further assistance or specific configurations, users are encouraged to contact NETUM support via phone, WhatsApp, or email. The manual provides detailed contact information, including the company's address in Guangzhou, China, and details for EU and UK representatives, ensuring global support.

Overall, the NETUM barcode scanner is a robust and adaptable device, offering a range of features for efficient barcode scanning and data management, supported by comprehensive documentation and customer service.
