Overview

This document provides a comprehensive guide for the NT-1200 barcode scanner, detailing its functionality, usage, and maintenance features. The NT-1200 is a plug-and-play USB 2.0 wired barcode scanner designed for efficient data capture.

Function Description

The NT-1200 is primarily a barcode scanner that reads and transmits barcode data to a connected device. It supports various barcode symbologies and offers customizable settings to adapt to different operational environments and user preferences. The scanner is designed to be user-friendly, with a focus on ease of setup and flexible configuration options.

Usage Features

Quick Setup: The NT-1200 is a plug-and-play device, meaning it can be used immediately after connecting its USB cable to a host device, provided a US keyboard layout is in use. For other keyboard types, a simple keyboard language setup is required before operation. This ensures that scanned data is uploaded correctly according to the specific keyboard layout.

Keyboard Language Configuration: To ensure accurate data transmission, the scanner allows users to configure the keyboard language. This is crucial for non-US keyboard layouts. For example, if a French keyboard is used, scanning the "French Keyboard" barcode will configure the scanner to upload barcodes according to the French keyboard layout. The American Keyboard layout is set as the default. Available keyboard language options include American, Portuguese, French, Spanish, German, Turkish Q, and Italian.

Scanning Modes: The NT-1200 offers two primary scanning modes to suit different operational needs:

  • Key Holding Mode: In this mode, the user presses and holds the trigger button to initiate scanning. The scanning process continues as long as the button is held down. It concludes either upon successful reading of a barcode or after a predefined single reading time limit is reached. Releasing the button also ends the reading process.
  • Continuous Mode: This mode enables the scanner to perform continuous scanning operations without requiring the user to hold the trigger. The scanner will continuously attempt to read barcodes. Similar to key holding mode, a reading operation ends upon successful barcode capture or after a single reading time limit. If no barcode is read within the specified time, the scanner will automatically re-trigger for the next reading attempt, making it suitable for high-volume scanning environments.

Terminator Configuration: The scanner provides options to append a terminating character suffix to the scanned data, which is useful for data entry into various applications. Users can choose from the following options by scanning the corresponding barcodes:

  • Add CR (Carriage Return): Appends a carriage return character to the scanned data.
  • Add LF (Line Feed): Appends a line feed character to the scanned data.
  • Add CR+LF (Carriage Return + Line Feed): Appends both a carriage return and a line feed character, commonly used for moving to the next line in text editors.
  • None: No terminating character is added.

Reader Beep Tone: The NT-1200 provides audible feedback for scanning operations. Users can enable or disable the beep tone according to their preference or work environment requirements.

  • Beep Tone ON: Activates the audible beep.
  • Beep Tone OFF: Deactivates the audible beep.

Barcode Symbology Support and Configuration: The scanner supports a wide range of common barcode symbologies, and each can be individually enabled or disabled. This flexibility allows users to optimize the scanner for specific types of barcodes, preventing accidental reads of unsupported or unwanted symbologies. Supported symbologies include:

  • EAN-8: Can be enabled or disabled.
    • Transmit Check Digit: Users can choose whether to transmit the check digit, which is the last digit used to verify data integrity. The default is to transmit the EAN-8 check digit.
    • Add-On Code: EAN-8 barcodes can be augmented with two-digit or five-digit add-on codes. The default setting disables add-on codes.
  • EAN-13: Can be enabled or disabled.
    • Transmit Check Digit: Users can choose whether to transmit the check digit. The default is to transmit the EAN-13 check digit.
    • Add-On Code: Similar to EAN-8, EAN-13 barcodes can also be augmented with two-digit or five-digit add-on codes. The default setting disables add-on codes.
  • Codabar: Can be enabled or disabled.
  • Code 11: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to enable Code 11.
  • Code 39: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to enable Code 39.
  • Full ASCII: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to enable Full ASCII.
  • Code 93: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to enable Code 93.
  • Code 128: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to enable Code 128.
  • GS1 DataBar Limited (RSS Limited): Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to disable RSS Limited.
  • GS1 DataBar Omnidirectional (RSS Omnidirectional): Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to disable RSS Omnidirectional.
  • UPC-A: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to enable UPC-A.
    • Transmit Check Digit: Users can choose whether to transmit the check digit. The default is to transmit the UPC-A check digit.
    • Add-On Code: UPC-A barcodes can be augmented with two-digit or five-digit add-on codes. The default setting disables add-on codes.
    • UPC-A Transfer to EAN-13: Allows the scanner to convert UPC-A barcodes to EAN-13 format. Can be enabled or disabled.
  • UPC-E: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to enable UPC-E.
  • Interleaved 2 of 5: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to disable Interleaved 2 of 5.
  • Industrial 2 of 5: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to enable Industrial 2 of 5.
  • Standard 2 of 5: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to enable Standard 2 of 5.
  • Matrix 2 of 5: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to enable Matrix 2 of 5.
  • MSI: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to disable MSI.
  • Plessey: Can be enabled or disabled. The default is to disable Plessey.

Add-On Code Setting (UPC/EAN/JAN): This feature allows users to configure the scanner to read barcodes with 2-digit or 5-digit add-on codes, which are supplementary data appended to main barcodes like UPC, EAN, and JAN.

  • Enable 2-Digit Add-On Code: Activates reading of 2-digit add-on codes.
  • Enable 5-Digit Add-On Code: Activates reading of 5-digit add-on codes.
  • Enable 2&5 Digit Add-On Code: Activates reading of both 2-digit and 5-digit add-on codes.
  • Disable Digit Add-On Code: Disables reading of all add-on codes. This is the default setting.

Code ID Setting: The Code ID feature helps users identify the type of barcode being scanned by adding a prefix or suffix to the scanned data. This is particularly useful in environments where multiple barcode symbologies are in use.

  • Disable Code ID: No Code ID is added. This is the default setting.
  • Enable Code ID (prefix): Adds a Code ID as a prefix to the scanned data.
  • Enable Code ID (suffix): Adds a Code ID as a suffix to the scanned data. An "Appendix A" is provided in the manual to reference the Code ID corresponding to each barcode type.

Custom Prefix and Suffix: The NT-1200 allows users to add custom prefixes and suffixes to the scanned data. This feature is highly flexible, enabling users to append specific characters or strings before or after the barcode data, which can be useful for data formatting or application-specific requirements.

  • Custom Prefix: Users can define a custom string (up to 32 characters) to be added before the scanned barcode data. The process involves scanning a "Custom Prefix" barcode, which clears any previous prefix settings, followed by scanning individual ASCII character barcodes from "Appendix B" to build the desired prefix.
  • Clear all prefix: Removes any previously configured custom prefixes.
  • Custom Suffix: Similar to custom prefixes, users can define a custom string (up to 32 characters) to be added after the scanned barcode data. The process involves scanning a "Custom Suffix" barcode, which clears any previous suffix settings, followed by scanning individual ASCII character barcodes from "Appendix B" to build the desired suffix.
  • Clear all suffix: Removes any previously configured custom suffixes.
  • Exit Custom Prefix and Suffix: Exits the custom prefix and suffix configuration mode.

Maintenance Features

Firmware Version Check: Users can easily check the scanner's current firmware version by scanning a specific command barcode. This information is important for troubleshooting and when seeking technical support, as it helps identify the specific software running on the device.

Default Configuration (Factory Reset): The scanner provides a convenient way to revert all configurations back to the factory default settings. By scanning a single "Factory Default" barcode, all custom settings, including keyboard language, scanning modes, terminator configurations, symbology enable/disable settings, Code ID, and custom prefixes/suffixes, are reset. This feature is invaluable for troubleshooting, starting fresh with configurations, or preparing the scanner for a new user or application.

The NT-1200 is designed to be a versatile and reliable tool for barcode scanning, offering a balance of ease of use and extensive customization options to meet diverse operational demands.
