Signal-to-noise ratio – a defi nition
The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is defi ned as follows:
SNR = 20log
10
Amplitude
signal
Amplitude
noise
()
Strictly speaking, we are unable to measure the signal without the noise
present, so Amplitude
signal
should read Amplitude
signal + noise
. However, for SNR
values in the magnitude applicable to typical Vectrino situations, the differ-
ence is negligible.
