NOTE: Cleaning of the puncture site is important. Sweat left
on the ngers may cause falsely high lactate test results.
5. Holding hand downward, massage nger with thumb
toward tip to stimulate blood ow.
6. Use a single-use, disposable safety lancet to puncture
the nger. To reduce the risk of pre-analytical error,
facilities should consider using a 21-gauge lancet when
collecting capillary samples.
7. Wipe off the rst drop with a clean tissue. The rst drop
may be contaminated.
8. Squeeze the nger to form a second drop of blood. To
avoid collection of interstitial uid as well as blood, do
not squeeze vigorously.
