Overview

This document provides instructions for the Olympus BX3M-CB/CBFM control box, which is used to control a motorized revolving nosepiece and MIX slider for reflected light observation on a microscope. The manual covers operation procedures, specifications, troubleshooting, assembly, and proper selection of the power supply cord.

Function Description:

The Olympus BX3M-CB and BX3M-CBFM control boxes are designed to interface with a microscope system, specifically the BX53M, to manage its motorized components. Their primary functions include:

  • Motorized Revolving Nosepiece Control: The control box allows for the precise movement and selection of objectives on the motorized nosepiece.
  • MIX Slider Control for Reflected Light Observation: It enables the operation and adjustment of the MIX slider, which is crucial for reflected light observation. This includes inserting and removing the slider, turning on/off its illumination, adjusting brightness, and selecting illumination patterns.
  • System Integration: The control box connects to a PC via USB or RS-232C cables, allowing for software control of the microscope functions. It also integrates with a hand switch (BX3M-HS) for manual operation of various settings.

Important Technical Specifications (BX3M-CB / BX3M-CBFM):

  • Main unit input: 5 V / 2.5 A
  • AC adapter input: 100-240 V ~ 50-60 Hz 0.4 A
  • AC adapter output: 5 V --- 2.5 A
  • Power consumption: 7.4 W, 22.7 VA
  • Cooling system: Natural circulation air cooling
  • Indicator: Power ON/OFF, Remote control by software enabled/disabled, Error, Connected to units (5 positions)
  • Dimensions and weight:
    • BX3M-CB: 115(W) x 56(D) x 106(H) mm, 490 g
    • BX3M-CBFM: 59(W) x 116(D) x 109(H) mm, 670 g
  • USB cable length: 2 m
  • RS-232C cable length: 2 m
  • External interface: RS-232C (external cable is included, D-SUB 9-pin female straight connector), USB 2.0 (external cable is included)

Operating Environment:

  • Indoor use
  • Altitude: Max. 2,000 meters
  • Ambient temperature: 5 to 40 °C (41 to 104 °F)
  • Maximum relative humidity: 80% for temperatures up to 31 °C (88 °F) (without condensation). In case of over 31 °C (88 °F), the relative humidity is decreased linearly through 70% at 34 °C (93 °F), 60% at 37 °C (99 °F), and to 50% at 40 °C (104 °F).
  • Supply voltage fluctuations: Not to exceed ±10% of the normal voltage.
  • Pollution degree 2 (in accordance with IEC60664-1)
  • Installation/Overvoltage category: II (in accordance with IEC60664-1)

Usage Features:

  • Turning ON/OFF: The main switch of the BX3M-CBFM is used to power on the device. A beep sound confirms activation.
  • MIX Slider Operation:
    • Insertion/Removal: The MIX slider for reflected light observation (U-MIXR) can be pushed to the second level (pressed in) for "IN" position or pulled out to the first level for "OUT" position.
    • Illumination Control: The ON/OFF button on the hand switch (BX3M-HS) controls the illumination of the MIX slider.
    • Brightness Adjustment: The light intensity button on the hand switch (BX3M-HS) allows for adjusting the brightness of the illumination. Short presses darken or brighten by a predetermined quantity, while long presses continuously darken or brighten. The light intensity state is indicated by a series of squares, from 0% (OFF) to 100% (Maximum).
    • Illumination Pattern Selection: The MODE button on the hand switch (BX3M-HS) is used to select the illumination pattern. Short presses change the pattern, while long presses rotate the illumination pattern automatically. A dial can also be used to change the illumination position.
  • Motorized Nosepiece Operation:
    • Objective Selection: The BX3M-HS hand switch is used to select the objective on the motorized nosepiece (BX3M-HSRE).
    • Dip Switch Settings: A dip switch on the control box (BX3M-CBFM or BX3M-CB) allows for configuring settings related to the motorized nosepiece and hand switch, such as beep sound, number of holes for the motorized nosepiece (5 or 6), and rotation direction (clockwise/counter-clockwise) when the right button is pressed.
  • PC Connection: The control box can be connected to a PC via USB or RS-232C cables for system control through application software.
  • Safety Symbols: The manual highlights various safety symbols, including CAUTION (potential hazard), NOTE (useful knowledge), and TIP (useful information), along with specific symbols for main switch ON/OFF.

Maintenance Features:

  • Handling Precautions:
    • The product is a precision instrument and should be handled with care to avoid sudden impacts or severe damage.
    • Disassembly of any part of the product is not recommended, as it can lead to failure.
    • Avoid using the product in areas subject to direct sunlight, high temperature and/or humidity, dust, or vibrations.
    • Before attaching or detaching units, ensure the power of the product is OFF.
