Installing cables
Connect the cables in the following order:
1. Connect the ISDN PBX and NT to the PRI port (see section “Connecting ISDN PBX and NT to the
SmartNode’s ISDN PRI port)
2. Connect the 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet Port (see section “Connecting the 10/100/1000Base-T Ether-
net cable)
3. Connect the power mains cable (see section“Connecting the Power Supply on page 26)
Connecting ISDN PBX and NT to the SmartNodes ISDN PRI port
The SmartNode comes with one ISDN PRI (E1/T1) port located on the rear panel (see figure 2 on page 16).
The port can be connected to the PSTN (ISDN NT) or to a PBX (ISDN TE). Please check the cabling and
port pinout first, before connecting the SmartNode ISDN port. See
Appendix C, “Cabling on page 46

D, “Port pin-outson page 50.
Connecting the 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet cable
The SmartNode SN4170 has automatic MDX (auto-cross-over) detection and configuration on the Ethernet
port. The port can be connected to a host or hub/switch with a straight-through wired cable.
Connect to the subscriber port of the broadband access modem (DSL, cable, WLL) to ETH 0/0.
For details on the Ethernet port pinout and cables, refer to Appendix C, “Cablingon page 46 and Appendix
D, “Port pin-outson page 50.
Do not work on the system or connect or disconnect
cables during periods of lightning activity.
The Interconnecting cables shall be acceptable for external
use and shall be rated for the proper application with
respect to voltage, current, anticipated temperature, flam
-
mability, and mechanical serviceability.
For the ISDN connection to a carrier Network, it shall be con-
nected to a Network Termination Device and not connected
directly to an outside POTS line.
