Overview

The Broadcastvision Entertainment (BVE) CAB – PRECOR-P62 is a console adapter box designed to enable Precor P62 cardio equipment consoles with a media adapter kit to control any cable, satellite, or IPTV set-top box (STB). This system eliminates the need for hand-held battery-operated remote controls, allowing users to control TV channels directly from the cardio equipment console. It is a proven technology, with Broadcastvision having offered set-top box control solutions since 2011.

Function Description:

The core function of the CAB – PRECOR-P62 is to act as an intermediary between the Precor P62 console and a third-party set-top box. The Precor P62 console, when equipped with the media adapter kit, sends Infrared (IR) control signals. While the console can natively control DirecTV or Enseo STBs via an IR Emitter, the CAB extends this capability to a wider variety of STBs.

Here's how it works:

  1. Signal Interception: The CAB intercepts the IR control signals sent by the Precor P62 console.
  2. Interpretation: The CAB interprets these signals. Crucially, the CAB is designed to understand and interpret only the control signals intended for an Enseo STB. Therefore, the Precor console must be configured as if it were being used with an Enseo STB, regardless of the actual STB brand being used.
  3. Retransmission: After interpreting the Enseo-formatted signal, the CAB retransmits it in the appropriate IR STB protocol supported by the specific third-party set-top box. This translation allows the Precor console to effectively control a diverse range of cable, satellite, or IPTV providers.
  4. Power and Connectivity: The CAB connects to the console's USB port solely for power. It also connects to the console's IR emitter cable to receive the STB control output signal. An IR emitter with a 12-foot patch cable (CABLE A) is then connected from the CAB to the set-top box to send the translated IR commands. A cable for STB control (CABLE B) connects the CAB to the console, and a console IR input cable (CABLE C) also connects to the CAB. A USB cable (CABLE C) provides power from the console to the CAB.

Usage Features:

  • Integrated TV Control: Members can control TV channels directly using the cardio equipment console controls, enhancing the user experience.
  • Provider Flexibility: Club operators can choose any cable, satellite, or IPTV provider, as the system is designed to be compatible with a wide range of set-top boxes.
  • Unrestricted Channels: TV channels are not restricted, and members can access all channels available per the club's subscription.
  • No Head-End System Required: An expensive head-end system is not necessary, simplifying installation and reducing costs.
  • Eliminates Wireless Devices: The system eliminates the need for troublesome wireless devices or hand-held battery-operated remote controls, reducing maintenance and management overhead.
  • Console Configuration: The console must be configured to map channel names to channel numbers for the specific service provider. All channels must be mapped to the "ENSEO" STB model in the Precor setup for the CAB to function correctly. This involves using Precor's "Channel Editor" software to create a channel lineup file (channel-guide.json) saved in a "precor" folder on a USB stick, which is then imported into the console's configuration menu.

Installation Instructions:

The installation process involves several steps:

  1. Console Preparation:

    • Disconnect all cables and remove the console from the unit if it's already installed without the USB to RJ45 patch connected.
    • Place the console face-down on a soft surface.
    • Remove the rear cable access cover by unscrewing 8 Phillips screws (6 in plastic, 2 through metal armor).
    • Carefully remove the back cover and armor from the P62.
    • Plug CABLE C (USB for power) from the CAB into the USB port on the console.
    • Be cautious of wires near the headphone jack when reconnecting the back cover. Ground and HR wires may need to be unplugged.
    • Route the other end of the USB to RJ45 patch cable through the hole in the P62 back armor.
    • Reattach the back cover using the 8 screws.
  2. Cable Routing: Feed the USB cable for the CAB, along with other necessary cables (IR, power, Ethernet, HDMI), through the back armor plate of the console.

  3. CAB Connection:

    • Connect the IR input from the console into CABLE C on the CAB.
    • Connect CABLE B (for STB control) to the CAB.
  4. CAB Installation: Install the CAB inside the back armor plate using double-sided Velcro.

  5. Equipment Base Wiring: Run the IR emitter patch cable (12 feet long) from the CAB, and the HDMI, power, and Ethernet cables (provided by Precor) down to the base of the cardio equipment.

  6. Set-Top Box Connection:

    • Connect the IR emitter cable into the patch cable coming out of the cardio equipment.
    • If the STB is next to the cardio equipment, connect the IR emitter onto the STB and plug the HDMI cable into the STB.
    • If the STB is located away from the cardio equipment, an extender system will be required. The manual provides wiring diagrams for different scenarios (1, 2, or 3 Ethernet cables) with recommendations for reliability and cost. The preferred option is 3 Ethernet cables, followed by 2 Ethernet cables (Good), and 1 Ethernet cable (Risky).

Maintenance Features & Troubleshooting:

The CAB is designed for ease of use and troubleshooting:

  • Pre-configuration: The CAB ships pre-configured by BVE for the target STB at the customer facility, minimizing additional configuration steps.
  • Technical Support: BVE technical support is available for assistance if the CAB does not work as expected.
  • Internal Dip-Switches: The CAB contains 8 internal dip-switches. Normally, these should all be in the OFF position. However, for specific deployment compatibility challenges, BVE Technical Support may instruct changes to these switch positions.
  • LED Indicators: The CAB has internal LED power lights for troubleshooting:
    • GREEN: Power LED, illuminates when the CAB is powered.
    • RED: Activity LED, flashes when the CAB receives and processes commands. These LEDs are visible through the enclosure around the CAB connector.
  • Common Troubleshooting Steps:
    • Double Button Presses: If pressing a channel button results in multiple presses, remove the CAB lid and turn on dip switch 2 and 4.
    • Incorrect IR Emitter Placement: The IR emitter must be correctly positioned on the front of the STB to work. Users may need to move it around to find the optimal location. A tip is to hold the emitter away initially and then "zero in" while pressing the channel button.
    • STB in RF Mode: Many STBs can operate in either RF or IR mode. For the CAB to function, the STB must accept IR channel commands. Users should check if the STB is in RF mode (e.g., by covering the hand-held remote's IR transmitter) and change it to IR mode if necessary.
    • IR Signal Strength Issue: In rare cases, the CAB may output an IR signal that is too strong, over-driving the STB receiver. Pulling the emitter slightly away from the STB and retesting can help.
    • No Continuity between CAB and IR Emitter: For "Far" set-top box scenarios using CAT5/6 cables, continuity issues can occur. Relocating the STB closer or temporarily running an alternate CAT5/6 cable can help diagnose this.
    • CAB Not Programmed for Correct STB: The CAB defaults to Broadcastvision's "Unicode" setting, which controls most popular STBs. If not operational, BVE support can provide specific dip switch settings for other providers. All CABs are shipped pre-programmed with Unicode, with dip switches in the OFF position.

Important Technical Specifications/Notes:

  • Precor Media Adapter Kit Required: The media adapter kit from Precor must be included with the P62 console.
  • HDMI Connection Only: Only the HDMI connection can be used for the TV signal; the Coax connection will not operate with the CAB.
  • STB Installation: The Broadcastvision CAB should always be installed after the cable/satellite service has been installed/activated and a picture is present on the screen. While wiring can be run without an active STB, testing channel changes will not be possible.
  • Console USB for Power: The console's USB port provides power solely to the CAB.
  • Precor P62 Back of Console Diagram: The manual includes a detailed diagram of the P62 console's back, showing connectors for COMM Data Cable (RJ45), Ethernet (LAN) Cable (RJ45), E-Stop Switch Cable, RF (TV) Cable with Isolator (F-Type coax), HHHR Sensor Input Cable, DC Input Power, microSD mass storage, and a Ferrite cable clamp. It warns against connecting the COMM Data Cable to the Ethernet input port to avoid damaging the CPA board.
  • Warranty: BVE manufactured products have a 30-day return policy with a 25% restocking fee. Products must be in original condition with original packaging. A Return Authorization number is required for all returns, repairs, or exchanges. Warranty repairs cover parts, labor, and return ground shipping. Non-warranty repairs have a 90-day parts and labor warranty. Warranties do not include on-site service or cover damage due to abuse, misuse, modification, or third-party actions.

This system provides a robust and flexible solution for integrating TV control into Precor P62 cardio equipment, enhancing user experience and simplifying club operations.
