Radaroperatesattheline-of-sight,soahighmountingpositiongivesbetterlongrange
performance.
Surroundinglargeobjects,inthesamehorizontalplane,caninterferewiththeradarsignaland
causeblindareasorshadowsectorsandfalsetargetsontheradardisplay(seebelow).
Donotmounttheradarscannersohighthatitisaffectedbythepitchingandrollingofthevessel.
Shadowareasandfalseechoes
Mounttheradarscannerawayfromlargestructuresorequipment,suchasenginestacks,
searchlights,horns,ormasts.Theseobjectsmaycauseshadowareasandfalseechoes.For
example,ifyoumounttheradarscanneronamast,echoesfromothertargetsmaybereflectedfrom
themast.Wetsailsmayalsocauseshadowareas,soradarperformancemaybereducedinthe
rain.Itisparticularlyimportanttoavoidshadowareasnearthebow.Raisingorevenloweringthe
radarscannermayhelptoreducetheseeffects.
Inshadowareasbeyondtheobstructiontherewillbeareductionofthebeamintensity.Theremay
beablindsectorifthebeamintensityisnotsufficienttoobtainanechofromanobject.Thismay
occurevenatcloserange.Forthisreasontheangularwidthandrelativebearingofanyshadowarea
mustbedeterminedatinstallation.
Y oumaybeabletodetectshadowareasorfalseechoesonyourmultifunctiondisplay.Forexample,
seacluttercanbeusedasagoodindicatorofblindarcs.Darksectorsontheradardisplayindicate
possibleshadowedareas.Thisinformationshouldbepostednearthedisplayunitandoperators
mustbealertfortargetsintheseblindareas.
Access
Theradarscannershouldbeeasilyaccessibletoallowmaintenancetobecarriedoutsafely.
Sufficientclearancemustbeallowedtofullyopenthescannerunitformaintenanceandservice.
Mountingplatform
Theradarscannermustbemountedonarigidandstableplatform.Theplatformmustbecapableof
supportingthemassandinertiaoftheradarscannerunderseagoingconditions.Theplatformshould
nottwist(causingbearingerrors)orbesubjecttoexcessivevibrationorshock.
Theplatformmustbefree-draining,topreventthepoolingofwaterbeneaththeradarscanner.
Themountingsitemustbeclearofthefollowing:
Ropes.
Standingrigging.
Runningrigging.
Heat.
Fumes.
People.
Magneticcompass
Mounttheradarscanneratleast1mawayfromamagneticcompass.
Multipleradarscanners
Iftworadarscannersareinstalledatdifferentlocationsinadualradarsystem,careshouldbe
takentoallowforthedifferenceinpositionoftheradarswhenswitchingbetweenthetwoonyour
multifunctiondisplay.Thisisespeciallynoticeableatshortrangesonlargervessels.
Toreducepossibleinterferencebetweenradarscannersinadualradarsystem:
Maximisethespacingbetweenthescanners.
Ifpossible,locatethescannerssothattheyarealignedvertically,onedirectlyabovetheother,
withaminimumof2metresverticalseparation.
Ifthescannerscan’tbealignedonedirectlyabovetheother,locateeachscannerthesame
distancefromthebowyourvessel.Interferenceismorelikelyifthescannersareinstalledonein
frontoftheother,evenwhenseparatedvertically.
