Generallocationrequirements
Whenselectingalocationfortheunititisimportanttoconsideranumberoffactors.
Ventilationrequirements
Toprovideadequateairflow:
•Ensurethatequipmentismountedinacompartmentofsuitablesize.
•Ensurethatventilationholesarenotobstructed.
•Ensureadequateseparationofequipment.
Mountingsurfacerequirements
Whenselectingamountingsurfaceensure:
•theproductwillbeadequatelysupportedonasecure,flatsurface.DoNOTmountunitsorcut
holesinplaceswhichmaydamagethestructureofthevessel.
•sufficientspaceisavailablearoundtheproduct.
•thereisnothingbehindthemountingsurfacethatmaybedamagedwhendrilling.
Cableroutingrequirements
Ensureyouhaveidentifiedtheroutethatallrequiredcableswilltakeandthatsufficientspaceis
availabletoallowconnectionofcables:
•Unlessotherwisestated,aminimumcablebendradiusof100mm(3.94in)isrequired.
•Wherenecessary,cablesupportsshouldbeusedtopreventstressonconnectors.
Electricalinterference
Selectalocationthatisfarenoughawayfromdevicesthatmaycauseinterference,suchasmotors,
generatorsandradiotransmitters/receivers.
Powersupply
Selectalocationthatisascloseaspossibletothevessel’sDCpowersupply.Thiswillhelpto
keepcablerunstoaminimum.
RFinterference
Certainthird-partyexternalelectricalequipmentcancauseRadioFrequency(RF)interferencewith
GNSS(GPS),AISorVHFdevices,iftheexternalequipmentisnotadequatelyinsulatedandemits
excessivelevelsofelectromagneticinterference(EMI).
SomecommonexamplesofsuchexternalequipmentincludeLEDspotorstriplights,andterrestrial
TVtuners.
Tominimizeinterferencefromsuchequipment:
•KeepitasfarawayfromGNSS(GPS),AISorVHFdevicesaspossible.
•Ensurethatanypowercablesforexternalequipmentarenotentangledwiththepowerordata
cablesforthesedevices.
•ConsiderfittingoneormorehighfrequencysuppressionferritestotheEMI-emittingdevice.The
ferrite(s)shouldberatedtobeeffectiveintherange100MHzto2.5GHz,andshouldbefitted
tothepowercableandanyothercablesexitingtheEMI-emittingdevice,ascloseaspossibleto
thepositionwherethecableexitsthedevice.
Compasssafedistance
Whenchoosingasuitablelocationforyourproductyoushouldaimtomaintainthemaximumpossible
distancebetweentheproductandanyinstalledcompass.Thisdistanceshouldbeatleast1m(3ft)in
alldirections.Forsmallervesselsitmaynotbepossibletoachievethisdistance.Inthissituation
ensurethatthecompassisnotaffectedbytheproductwhenitispoweredon.
