TYPICAL FUEL TANK FILL/VENT
Fuel tank fill
ttings are normally
located on the deck.
They are marked
diesel. Never pump
gasoline in a fuel tank
designated for diesel fuel.
After fueling use
the tting key tool
to close the tting
tightly. Failure to
secure the fuel tting tightly may allow water to enter the
fuel tank and eventually the engine fuel system. Periodically
lubricate the fuel tting O-ring by coating with clean diesel
fuel. This will help keep the O-ring pliable and retain its
sealing properties.
The fuel vent serves as a pressure relief for the diesel tank
and is a safety over ow device. The vent is found below
the fuel ll tting at the starboard hull side. It has a screen
inside which needs to be periodically cleaned. Insects can
cause the vent to clog resulting in increased pressure in
the fuel system especially noticeable when lling the fuel
tank. In extreme clogging cases the fuel will emerge from
the ll because the vent is not able to relieve the air in the
fuel tank that is being replaced with diesel fuel.
Placed near
the aft top of
the fuel tank
is an elec-
tronic fuel
sender. This
device reads
the amount
of fuel re-
maining in
the fuel tank
and sends a signal to various displays includ-
ing the fuel gauge located at the helm (dash).
Always use the one-third rule with diesel fuel. One-third
for outbound cruising, one-third for inbound cruis-
ing, and the remaining one-third fuel supply for reserve.
