12 Connecting to Console Ports of Remote Devices
The U-router NGW is capable of communicating with serial ports of remote devices. Either through
the RS232 interface, accessible from the front connector, labeled “Serial” or through the USB
connector labeled “USB-B” on the back of the unit.
Only one type of device can be monitored at the same time. You will have to either choose the
RS232 serial port, or the USB port for connecting a remote device.
The U-router contains various drivers for USB to serial convertors that have been pre-tested with
Cisco and Juniper devices. Cisco devices will typically show up as /dev/ttyACMx and Juniper devices
as /dev/ttyUSBx on the U-router NGW.
In order to make connecting Cisco and Juniper devices easier, the U-router NGW attempts to map
the corresponding device files to /dev/ttyCisco and /dev/ttyJuniper respectively. You will have
to configure the right terminal interface dependent on the connected device.
12.1 Connecting an RS232 serial console port
The RS232 port on the RJ45 connector is wired in such a way that you can connect the serial console
port from the remote device using a normal (straight through) Ethernet cable. See Figure 5: Serial
port configured for Ethernet cable.
In the example below the console port of a Cisco Catalyst 3560 switch is connected to the Serial
port of the U-router using a normal RJ-45 to RJ-45 Ethernet cable.

When the Serial port of the U-router NGW is connected you will have to set the communication
parameters of the U-router NGW on the Settings page of the WEB UI. The console port of the
remote device is then accessible through the WEB UI of the U-router NGW.
In order to communicate over the serial port to a Cisco connected device do the following:
• Set the Terminal Interface to /dev/ttyS2
• Set the Terminal Speed to 9600
• Set Console Mode to Ethernet Cable
