4.4 Serial Port (RS232) Pin Assignments
The U-router NGW supports a serial port on an RJ45 connector on the front panel. The signal levels
are compatible with TIA/EIA-232-F levels. The RS232 receiver has a typical threshold of 1.3 V, a
typical hysteresis of 0.5 V, and can accept ±30-V inputs. The pinout of the RJ45 connector is such
that a standard Ethernet cable can be used to connect a Cisco console port.
The transmit and receive pin can be swapped in software so that different types of cable can be
used. For example; swapping the transmit (6) and receive (3) pin enables a Cisco roll-over cable to
be used between the U-router NGW and the Cisco RJ45 console port.

The default configuration for the serial port is: “Ethernet Cable”.
