8 Glossary
Flue gas mass flow Flue gas quantity guided by the flue gas system into open air, dependent on the set burner output.
Filling water Water quantity to be filled into the heating system before initial start-up.
Burner setting Settings on the gas burner, which should be made only by technical staff, for example setting the gas type, gas-air
mixture, maximum and minimum output of the gas pressure control as well as the electrodes.
Calorific value Energy which is generated on the combustion of the fuel and of the condensation of the flaue gas as heat and which
can be used (synonym = top thermal value)
Condensing technology Heating technology which also makes use of the condensation heat of the flue gas in additional to the sensitive
combustion energy (heating value) and which raises the efficiency of the system.
Energy saving ordinance
(ENEV)
Legal specifications, which defines standards for construction engineering and heating technology as well as evaluates
the efficiency of the heating and hot water preparation, replaced the Thermal protection and heating systems
ordinance on 1-2-2002.
Make-up water Water quantity which is to be topped up in the event of water loss.
Automatic firing unit System, which starts and controls the gas burner, monitors the combustion process and switches off in the event of
failure of the gas burner.
Gas-Air compound
regulation
System, which adjusts the gas volume flow through the gas pressure control according to the air mass flow.
Heating characteristic Mathematical relation between outside temperature and set inflow temperature (synonym = heat curve), in order to
attain the desired room temperature for every outside temperature.
Heating circuit Circulation of the heated water from the heating boiler to the heating areas and back.
Heating return flow Part of the heating circulation which conducts the cooled water through the pipe system from the heating pipes of the
rooms back to the heating boiler.
Heating inflow Part of the heating circulation which conducts the heated water from the heating boiler to the heating areas in the
rooms.
Boiler control panel Operating unit in the front area of the heating boiler, which comprises main switch, malfunction lights, water pressure
gauge as well as program selection keys, rotary button and display.
Condensation heat Energy, which is generated at the time of condensation of the water steam in the cooling flue gas and is used for heat
generation in the calorific value technology.
Air-flue gas system (LAS) System of flue gas and air suction pipes, which cools down the flue gas and heats suction air by the countercurrent
principle. On one hand, the generated condensation heat from the flue gas is used. On the other hand. the flue gas
heats up the suction combustion air. Both factors raise the efficiency of the system.
Modulation Automatic and continuous adjustment of the thermal output to the particular heat requirement without having to
switching various heat stages or cycles.
Rated output Maximum thermal output of the heating boiler at certain operating temperatures.
Ambient air-dependent
mode
Operating method of the system, in which the heating device sources the necessary air for combustion from the instal-
lation room.
Ambient air-independent
mode
Operating method of the device in which the heating device sources the air necessary for combustion not from the
installation room, but from the open air through the far-flung gas system.
Water-shortage protection /
Over-heating protection
Safety device which switches off the heating boiler automatically if there is a water shortage, in order to avoid over-
heating.
Timer program Times which can be set on the operating unit to define regular heating, economy and hot water phases.
