The Sena Tufftalk M is an industrial Bluetooth communication system designed for enhanced communication and hearing protection in demanding environments. This headset is available in two main types: Over-the-Head Earmuff and Hard Hat Mount Earmuff, offering versatility to suit different user needs and safety requirements.
Function Description:
The Tufftalk M provides a comprehensive suite of communication features, including Mesh Intercom, Bluetooth Intercom, mobile phone connectivity, stereo music playback, and an FM radio.
- Mesh Intercom: This is a key feature, offering instant and effortless communication without the need for pre-grouping. It supports both Open Mesh and Group Mesh.
- Open Mesh: Allows users to freely communicate with a virtually unlimited number of users within a selected channel (1-9). The working distance between each Tufftalk M in Open Mesh can be up to 1.1 km (0.7 miles) in open terrain, extendable up to 4.4 km (2.8 miles) with a minimum of 6 users. Up to 6 users can talk simultaneously. Users can change channels to avoid interference.
- Group Mesh: A closed group intercom conversation that allows users to leave, join, or rejoin without pairing each headset. It supports up to 24 users in each private group, with up to 6 users talking simultaneously. Group Mesh is created through a "Mesh Grouping" process.
- Toggling Open Mesh/Group Mesh: Users can switch between Open Mesh and Group Mesh without resetting the Mesh, preserving network connection information.
- Reset Mesh: Resets the Mesh to Open Mesh (default: channel 1) and deletes stored Mesh Network information.
- Bluetooth Intercom: Enables two-way and multi-way conference-call-style conversations with up to three other Sena headsets.
- Two-Way Intercom: Initiate conversations with first, second, or third intercom friends by tapping the Center Button.
- Multi-Way Intercom (Three-Way and Four-Way): Allows conference calls with multiple intercom friends. Mobile phone connection is temporarily disconnected during multi-way intercom but reestablishes afterward.
- HD Intercom: Enhances two-way intercom audio quality. It is temporarily disabled during multi-way intercom.
- Mobile Phone Connectivity:
- Call Making and Answering: Answer incoming calls by tapping the Center Button or by voice (if VOX Phone is enabled). End or reject calls by pressing the Center Button for 2 seconds. Make calls by dialing on the phone or using voice dialing (press Center Button for 3 seconds).
- Speed Dialing: Quickly make calls using a voice speed dial menu with up to three assigned speed dial numbers, plus last number redial.
- Three-Way Conference Phone Call with Intercom Participant: Add an intercom friend to a mobile phone conversation.
- Stereo Music:
- Bluetooth Stereo Music: Play/pause music by pressing and holding the Center Button for 1 second. Adjust volume with (+) or (-) Buttons. Track forward/back by pressing and holding (+) or (-) Buttons for 1 second.
- Music Sharing: Share music with an intercom friend during a two-way intercom conversation.
- FM Radio:
- On/Off: Turn on/off by pressing and holding the (-) Button for 1 second.
- Preset Stations: Listen to saved preset stations.
- Seek and Save: Search for stations and save them as presets via Sena Device Manager or Sena Utility App.
- Scan and Save: Automatically scan and temporarily save the nearest 10 radio stations.
- Temporary Preset: Automatically finds and saves the nearest 10 radio stations without changing existing presets. These are cleared when the headset is powered off.
- Region Selection: Optimize seek function by selecting the appropriate FM frequency region (Worldwide, Americas, Asia, Australia, Europe, Japan) via Sena Device Manager.
- RDS AF Setting (Radio Data System Alternative Frequency): Allows the receiver to re-tune to an alternative frequency if the primary signal becomes weak.
- FM Station Guide: Voice prompts for FM station frequencies when selecting preset stations.
- Mesh Audio Multitasking (Always On): Allows simultaneous Mesh Intercom conversation while listening to music, FM radio, or GPS instructions. Overlaid audio plays in the background with reduced volume during intercom and returns to normal afterward. Configurable via Intercom-Audio Overlay Sensitivity and Audio Overlay Volume Management settings.

Usage Features:
- Button Operation: The headset features a Center Button, (+) Button, (-) Button, and Mesh Intercom Button for controlling all functions.
- Voice Prompts: Provides audible feedback for various operations and settings. Can be disabled via software settings, but essential prompts (configuration menu, battery level, speed dial, FM radio) remain active.
- Function Priority: The headset prioritizes functions in the following order (highest to lowest): Mobile phone, Mesh Intercom / Bluetooth Intercom, Music sharing via Bluetooth stereo, FM radio, Bluetooth stereo music. Lower priority functions are interrupted by higher priority ones.
- Configuration Setting: Access a configuration menu by holding the Center Button for 10 seconds to adjust settings like Phone Pairing, Delete All Pairings, Factory Reset, and Exit Configuration.
- Software Configuration Setting: Customize headset settings via the Sena Device Manager (for PC/Apple computers) or the Sena Utility App (for Android/iOS mobile phones). Settings include Speed Dial, Channel Setting (Open Mesh), Audio Boost (increases/reduces overall maximum volume), VOX Phone (voice-activated call answering), VOX Sensitivity (adjustable levels 1-5), Intercom-Audio Overlay Sensitivity (adjustable levels 1-5), Audio Overlay Volume Management (prevents volume reduction of overlaid audio during intercom), HD Intercom, Voice Prompts, RDS AF Setting, FM Station Guide, and Advanced Noise Control.
Maintenance Features:
- Charging: Charge the headset using the supplied USB power & data cable connected to a computer's USB port or a USB wall charger. Any 3rd party USB charger approved by FCC, CE, or IC can be used.
- Checking Battery Level: When powering on, the red LED flashes indicate battery level (4 flashes: High, 3 flashes: Medium, 2 flashes: Low).
- Volume Adjustment: Volume levels are maintained independently for each audio source, even after rebooting.
- Muting the Microphone: Tap the Center Button and (-) Button to mute/unmute the microphone (works only when Bluetooth Intercom or Mesh Intercom is active). Mute setting returns to default (unmute) after powering off.
- Replacing Ear Pads: Ear pads can be removed and replaced by hand.
- Replacing Hard Hat Adapters/Rubber Pads: If Type A Hard Hat Adapters don't fit or rubber pads fray, they can be replaced with Type B Hard Hat Adapters and new rubber pads by loosening/tightening screws.
- Firmware Upgrade: The headset supports firmware upgrades via the Sena Device Manager, accessible through www.sena.com.
- Troubleshooting:
- Fault Reset: Reset the headset by pushing the pin-hole reset button located below the Center Button if it's not working properly.
- Factory Reset: Restore the headset to factory default settings via the configuration menu. This will turn off the headset after resetting.
