Lubricating the Drive Chain
Removing, Cleaning and Re-installing
the Drive Chain
Lubricate the drive chain after every three hours
of riding, sooner if the chain appears dry. Raise
the rear wheel off the ground using a maintenance
stand. Slowly turn the rear wheel by hand and satu-
rate each drive chain link joint so that the lubricant
penetrates between the link plates, pins, bushings
and rollers. Drive chain lubricant for motorcycle use
should be available at your dealer and most power-
sports shops.
1. Remove the master link retaining clip (1) with
pliers. Do not bend or twist the clip. Remove the
master link, then remove the drive chain.
3. Inspect the drive chain for possible wear or
damage. Replace the drive chain if it has dam
aged rollers, loose tting links, or otherwise
appears unserviceable.
2. Clean the drive chain with a non-ammable
(high ash point) solvent such as kerosene and
allow it to dry.
When the drive chain becomes extremely
dirty, it should be removed and cleaned prior
to lubricating.
