SYNRAD OEM v40 Operator’s Manual Version 4
Connecting
OEM air-cooled connections
(SAB models)
Because v40 OEM air-cooled lasers are shipped without cooling fans, customers must provide some type of
air cooling to prevent overheating. SYNRAD recommends an airow of at least 140 cubic feet per minute
for each of the two required fans. Figure 1-5 illustrates the fan placement necessary to keep the lasers heat
sink temperature below 45 °C. (113 °F). To provide proper airow, cooling fans should have a diameter of
approximately 4.5–5 inches (114–127 mm) and have at least 2.25" (57.2 mm) of unobstructed clearance
between the outside edge of the fan housing and any mounting surface or enclosure. Because of the heat
generated by internal RF circuitry, establishing signicant airow evenly over the entire surface area of the
combined laser/RF chassis is vitally important to the performance and longevity of the laser.
Figure 1-5 Recommended v40 cooling fan locations
Note: The air-cooled OEM lasers front plate is not compatible with the fan kit used on fan-cooled
v40 lasers. Because a dierent front plate is required, the factory-supplied fan kit cannot be retro-
tted to air-cooled OEM lasers in the eld; it must be installed at the factory.
A +24 VDC (1.5 A max.) output to power customer-supplied cooling fans is available from the SAB
model’s side-mounted DB-9 connector. Refer to DB-9 connections in the Technical Reference chapter for
cautions, pinouts, and signal descriptions.

The +24 VDC output described above is not fused or electrically
protected. Do not short this pin to ground; the control board will be
damaged.
Fans should be mounted so that they are centered both
horizontally and vertically on each side of the OEM v40 laser
