Whileitisimportanttoprotectles,data,andsettingsthatareontheharddiskdriveorsolid-statedrive,
youalsomightneedtoinstallanewoperatingsystem,installnewdevicedrivers,updateyoursystemUEFI
BIOS,orrecoverpreinstalledsoftware.Thisinformationwillhelpyouhandleyourcomputerwithproper
careandkeepitintopworkingshape.

Installinganewoperatingsystem
Ifyouinstallanewoperatingsystemonyourcomputer,youneedtoinstallthesupplementlesand
ThinkPaddevicedriversforitatthesametime.
•IfyouinstallanewWindows7operatingsystem,thenecessarylesarelocatedinthefollowingdirectories
onyoursolid-statedriveorharddiskdrive:
–ThesupplementlesfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\OSFIXESdirectory.
–ThedevicedriversfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERSdirectory.
–ThepreloadedsoftwareprogramsareintheC:\SWTOOLS\APPSdirectory.
Note:Ifyoucannotndthesupplementles,thedevicedrivers,andprogramsoftwareyouneedon
yourharddiskdrive,orifyouwanttoreceiveupdatesandthelatestinformationaboutthem,goto
http://www.lenovo.com/ThinkPadDrivers.
•IfyouinstallanewWindows8operatingsystem,gotohttp://www.lenovo.com/ThinkPadDriversto
downloadandinstallthelatestdevicedrivers.
Note:Theprocessofinstallingthenewoperatingsystemdeletesallthedataonyourharddiskdrive,
includingbackupsorimagesthatwerestoredinahiddenfolderbyuseoftheRescueandRecoveryprogram.
Beforeyoubegin
Beforeyouinstalltheoperatingsystem,dothefollowing:
•IfyouaregoingtoinstallanewWindows7operatingsystem,copyallthesubdirectoriesandlesinthe
C:\SWTOOLSdirectorytoaremovablestoragedevice,toavoidlosinglesduringtheinstallation.
•Printtheinstructionsyouwilluse.Gotothesectionfortheoperatingsystemyouareusing:
–“InstallingtheWindows7operatingsystem”onpage76
–“InstallingtheWindows8operatingsystem”onpage77
Notes:
–TheUEFIBIOSfeaturesaresupportedontheWindows7operatingsystem(64-bit)andtheWindows8
operatingsystem(64-bit).EnsurethattheUEFI/LegacyBootsettinginThinkPadSetupissettoyour
preferencetobootthedesiredoperatingsystem.
–Afterinstallingtheoperatingsystem,youshouldnotchangetheinitialUEFI/LegacyBootsettingin
ThinkPadSetup.TheUEFI/LegacyBootsettingmustbethesameasitwaswhentheWindows
operatingsystemimagewasinstalled.Otherwise,theoperatingsystemwillnotbootcorrectly.
