Ifthegroundistoormtoobtainthedesiredcoring
depth,thecoringheadcangetintoa“bouncing”
rhythm.Thisisduetothetinesattemptingtopenetrate
thehardpan.Thisconditioncanbecorrectedby
attemptingoneormoreofthefollowing:
Bestresultsareobtainedafterarainorwhenturf
hasbeenwateredthepreviousday.
Reducethenumberoftinesperstomper
arm.Attempttomaintainasymmetricaltine
congurationtoevenlyloadthestomperarms.
Reducetinepenetration(depthsetting)ifthe
groundishardpacked.Cleanupthecores,water
theturf,andaerateagainatadeeperpenetration.
Aerationofsoiltypesbuiltontopofhardsubsoils
(i.e.sand/soilcapplacedoverrockyground)can
causeundesiredholequality.Thisiscausedwhen
theaerationdepthisgreaterthanthesoilcapand
thesubsoilistoohardtopenetrate.Whenthetines
contactthissubsoil,themachinemayliftandcause
thetopoftheholestobecomeelongated.Reducethe
aerationdepthsufcientlytoavoidpenetrationinto
thehardsubsoil.
UsingNeedleTines
Longslendertinesusedineitheraneedletinehead
orminitineheadcanleavethefrontorrearofthe
holetuftedorslightlydeformed.Holequalityforthis
congurationgenerallyimprovesifyoureducecoring
headspeed10to15%fromfulloperatingspeed.
ReducetheenginespeeduntilthePTOspeedis
around460to490rpm.Theforwardspacingisnot
affectedbyreducingtheenginespeed.Thepushed
holecanalsobeaffectedbythepositionoftherotalink
damperassembly.RefertoAdjustingtheRotalink
Assembly(page26).
AvoidingRootZoneLifting
Usingthemini-tineheadsinconjunctionwithlarger
coringtinesorlargediametersolidtinescaninduce
signicantstressontherootzoneoftheturf.This
stresscanfracturetherootzoneandcausealifting
actiontotheturf.Ifthisdamageoccurs,tryoneor
moreofthefollowing:
Reducethetinedensity(removesomeofthe
tines).
Decreasethecoringdepth.
Note:Trydecreasingcoredepthin13mm(1/2
inch)increments.
Increasetheforwardholespacing(changethe
tractionunittransmissionuponegear).
Decreasethetinediameter(solidorcoring).
AdjustingtheRotalink
Assembly
Themountingheightoftherotalinkdamperassembly
affectsthereactiveforceappliedtothestomperarm
andgroundengagementduringaeration.Intheevent
ofthefrontoftheholebeingpushed(elongatedor
dimpled),a“stiffer”positioncanhelpresistthispush
andimproveholequality.Intheeventoftheback
oftheholebeingpushed(elongatedordimpled)a
“softer”positioncanimprovetheholequality.
1.Removethe2locknuts(1/2inch)securingthe
rotalinkdamperassemblytotheundersideof
thecoringheadframe(Figure25).
2.Lowerthedamperassemblytoexposethe
spacers(Figure25).
3.Move1or2spacerspersidefromthedamper
assemblytothetopofthecoringheadframe.
Eachspacerisequivalentto1/2inch.Thelower
bumperspacermustremainonthedamper
assembly.
