To inspect the engine oil level:
Start the engine and run at idle for
approximately five minutes.
Stop the engine, then wait for at
least three minutes for the engine oil
to settle.
Note the engine oil level visible in the
sight glass.
When correct, engine oil should be
visible in the sight glass at a point
midway between the upper
(maximum) and lower (minimum)
horizontal lines marked on the
crankcase.
Note
An accurate indication of the level of
engine oil in the engine is only shown
when the engine is at normal operating
temperature and the motorcycle is
upright (not on the side stand).
If it is necessary to top off the
engine oil level, remove the filler plug
and add engine oil, a little at a time,
until the level registered in the sight
glass is correct.
Once the correct level is reached,
install and tighten the filler plug.
Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
Warning
Prolonged or repeated contact with
engine oil can lead to skin dryness,
irritation and dermatitis.
Used engine oil contains harmful
contamination that can lead to skin
cancer.
Always wear suitable protective
clothing and avoid skin contact with
used engine oil.
Warning
The engine oil may be hot.
Avoid contact with the hot engine oil
by wearing suitable protective
clothing, gloves and eye protection.
Contact with hot engine oil may cause
the skin to be scalded or burned.
The engine oil and filter must be
replaced in accordance with scheduled
maintenance requirements.

The sump guard must be removed
before starting this procedure, see
page136.
