Check wire lengths to verify that voltage drops are acceptable. Calculations are based on a single RM-4 reader with keypad and LCD (250mA). Using 22AWG, distance =
600ft. (.0165 ohms/ft.). Using 18AWG, distance = 1500ft. (.0065 ohms/ft.).
2
To comply with UL requirements, use shielded, minimum 22 AWG stranded, twisted pair cable for monitor points, DSMs, and REXs. Use Belden 9462 or equivalent.

Grounding requirements
The grounding requirements are as follows:
■ Grounding must follow NEC codes or the applicable local code.
■ Ensure that the reader is properly connected to the ground reference from the wiring on the RS-485 terminal.
■ When disconnecting the wiring, disconnect ground wires last, to provide maximum protection to the equipment and
personnel.
Disconnect all power sources before modifying the wiring.
