Questions and Answers

Overview

The VICI DBS Mistral Evolution is a nitrogen generator that utilizes Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology to produce a continuous or on-demand stream of pure nitrogen gas. It is designed for laboratory applications, particularly for LCMS instruments, where inert gases are required. The device removes oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water from compressed air to achieve nitrogen purity.

Function Description:

The Mistral Evolution incorporates two dynamically balanced, long-life compressors to deliver nitrogen gas. The PSA system is at the core of its operation, ensuring the removal of impurities from the air. The generator can produce nitrogen with varying levels of purity and flow rates depending on the model. It is designed to operate continuously or on demand, making it adaptable to different laboratory needs. The device features a backlit display and command buttons for user interaction, allowing for monitoring of parameters and system control.

Usage Features:

The Mistral Evolution is designed for ease of use with a clear backlit display and intuitive command buttons. Users can access various menus including PARAMETER, CONFIGURE (password protected for trained individuals), DIAGNOSTIC, ALARM HISTORY, SET CLOCK, and SPECIAL FUNCTIONS (password protected).

  • Parameter Settings: Allows users to set units for pressure (bar/kPa/psi), temperature (°C/°F), and flow rate (L/min - ft3/min). It also includes settings for Auto Start (Yes/No), Display Contrast (1-10), Beeper (Yes/No), and Pre-Alarms in List (Yes/No).
  • External Tank Management: The generator can be configured to work with an optional external tank. In this mode, the generator stops when the tank reaches a maximum pressure (P. Max. Tank) and restarts when the pressure drops below a minimum level (P. Min. Tank). This feature helps conserve energy and extend compressor lifespan by preventing continuous operation when full flow is not needed. The P. Min. Tank can be set from 1-8 bar, and P. Max. Tank from 6-9 bar. A Standby Purge option allows for a restart every 24 hours if the generator is in standby mode with an external tank.
  • Diagnostic Information: Users can view instant readings for temperature inside the cabinet, outlet pressure, internal reservoir pressure (Int. Tank Pressure), compressor work time (Comp. Work Time), and time remaining until the 4000h service (Service 4000h).
  • Safety Features: The device includes a main switch for power disconnection and is designed with safety symbols indicating general warnings, risk of asphyxia, oxidant material, WEEE compliance, and fuse locations. It is crucial to ensure proper ventilation and check O2 levels in low-volume rooms due to oxygen rejection as waste.

Maintenance Features:

The Mistral Evolution incorporates several features and indicators to facilitate maintenance and ensure optimal performance.

  • Dust Filters: The device has dust filters that require replacement every 4000 hours, or more frequently in dusty environments, to prevent damage and maintain nitrogen quality. Clogged filters can lead to device damage or poor nitrogen quality.
  • Alarms and Pre-Alarms: The system provides both pre-alarms and alarms to alert users to potential issues.
    • Pre-Alarms (Do not stop the device):
      • Temperature: Indicates the cabinet temperature is over the maximum limit. Users should check room temperature, ventilation, and fan operation.
      • P. Min Internal Tank: Indicates internal reservoir pressure is below the lower limit.
      • WT CMP: Suggests compressors need changing.
      • SRV 4000: Indicates the 4000h service (filter change) is due.
    • Alarms (Stop the device):
      • Temperature: Indicates the cabinet temperature is too high.
      • Int. Tank Pressure Min.: Indicates internal reservoir pressure is too low.
      • Int. Tank Pressure Max.: Indicates internal reservoir pressure is too high (10 bar) and the relief valve is not working.
      • P. Max Outlet: Indicates outlet pressure is too high.
      • WT CMP: Indicates compressors must be changed.
      • SRV 4000: Indicates the filter must be changed.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a troubleshooting section with common problems, potential causes, and corrective actions, such as checking for blockages in the cooling system, replacing compressors, changing dust filters, and checking for leakages.
  • Service Box: The back of the device includes a service box, providing access for adjustments, such as setting the outlet pressure.
  • Warranty: The warranty is void if the device is self-serviced without an agreement with VICI DBS Service Department. Users are advised to contact the service department for support.
