Operator’s Manual Backhoe Series BH - Page 41 of 91 - Version 2.0
Practice Makes You Great
◼ Operate the backhoe control levers to become familiar with their speed and movements.
The PTO speed and the hydraulic system's size will determine the cylinder operation's speed.
(Reduce engine speed to obtain acceptable backhoe operation speed when powering from
tractor systems with higher output than required.)
◼ The smooth, light handling of the controls will result in the most efficient backhoe operation.
• Swing the boom several times to practice controlling the speed of the
swing. Do not operate the swing more than 45° for the first few times,
then gradually increase the arc.
• Do not slam the swing unit into the rubber bumpers to avoid damage to
the Backhoe.
• You can use the boom ‘Float’ function during digging to eliminate down
pressure when cleaning the bottom of a trench.
• The primary purpose of the boom ‘Float’ function is to protect the
operator from serious injury if the Backhoe or tractor hitch fails.
◼ The best results are obtained by digging near the center of the swing arc; then, you can dump
material on either side.
◼ As the operator becomes more familiar with the Backhoe operation, it will be common practice
to operate two controls simultaneously.
For example, with the bucket and the dipper stick extended, you can operate the lift control
and crowd control together to bring the bucket toward the operator with down pressure.
◼ As the dipper stick approaches the operator, you can operate the crowd and bucket controls
together to close the bucket and trap the material. At the end of the stroke, you can manage
the lift and crowd controls together to move the load up and away from the operator to save
time in clearing the excavation.
◼ This dual operation of controls will speed and simplify the digging process. Usually, the two or
more movements will not be equal or even simultaneous. Still, as the pressure within the
cylinders changes and the resistance on an operating member of the hoe lessens, it will begin
to move. It is balancing the force of members against the other.
• Actuating the bucket is the key to powerful digging.
• Operating the crowd and bucket controls simultaneously will ensure a
full bucket and prevent wasting motion and time.
