VMG Introduction
1.1 Overview
The VMG is a VDSL bridge, supporting IEEE 802.3az. VDSL provides fast Internet access over POTS (Plain
Old Telephone Service) analog telephone wires.
As a network bridge (or layer 2), the VMG functions as a switch. There is no IP routing or NAT between
networks, it simply extends the layer 2 domain. The “WAN” port of the router, and the “LAN” port of the
VMG, are all in the same LAN with no routing (or layer 3) network separation.
The VMG supports Zero Configuration Internet Access. Once you connect and turn on the VMG, it
automatically detects the Internet connection settings (such as the VCI/VPI numbers and the
encapsulation method) from the ISP and makes the necessary configuration changes.
1.1.1 Internet Access
Use the gray phone cable to connect the DSL port to a DSL splitter or directly to the telephone wall
outlet. You can have multiple WAN services over one ADSL or VDSL. The VMG cannot work in ADSL and
VDSL mode at the same time.
Note: The ADSL and VDSL lines share the same DSL interface in the VMG.
A computer, gateway, or router can connect to the VMG’s LAN port.

1.2 Ways to Manage the VMG
Use any of the following methods to manage the VMG.
• Web Configurator. This is recommended for management of the VMG using a (supported) web
browser.
• Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Use for collecting and organizing information about
the VMG and for modifying that information to change the VMG behavior.
• Secure Shell (SSH), Telnet. Use for troubleshooting the VMG by qualified personnel.
