11.2 Supplementary Information for Configuring Piston Pump/Pulsation
Parameter Entry Comments
The main application areas for the AC magnetic field instruments are where fast mea-
surement processing is required for continuous flow metering of single or multi phase
fluids. If pulsation dampeners are used in piston pump applications, then usually DC
magnetic field instruments can be used. If the use for pulsation dampeners is not de-
sired or impossible, then instruments with higher magnetic field excitation frequencies
are required. When metering pulsating flows downstream from a simple, single stroke
piston pump with a high or unsteady stroke frequency, hose or diaphragm pump, the
converter must be in position to process the peak flowrates correctly. These peak val-
ues are often three times the average flowrate. As long as the converter can process
high flowrate spikes linearly and a sufficient number of samples are measured, the ba-
sic accuracy of the measurement system for longer term measurements is maintained.
Therefore the Piston Pump selection is made in the submenu Operating Mode.
Especially for pulsating flow or very noisy signals a digital filter is incorporated in the
converter. It smooths the instantaneous indications and provides a pulsation free cur-
rent output.
In the parameter Damping a selection can be made in the range from 0.2 to 3 sec (=
1 τ).
