5 Protecting Local Disks

If your hard disk is divided into multiple partitions, t his list displays one item for
the entire hard disk, and one item for each partition. If your computer has
multiple hard disks, this list displays an item for each entire disk and an item for
each
partition on each disk. Each par tit ion is identified by it s drive letter .
Note: Dynamic disks are not supported.
If you select an entire disk, all the partitions on tha t disk are protected as a
single entity . This means that you can’t later recover only one partition ; you have
to recover the entire disk. If you select just a partition, you can subsequently
recover
just that partition.
In addition, you can recover a da t a disk or partition using DiskSafe Express, but
you
can recover a system disk or partition only using the recovery CD or when
booting
remotely from a backup on the storage system . Therefore, if you have
separate
partitions for your system information and your data, you migh t want t o
pro
t ect each one separately .
Recommendations:
l If your computer has only one disk with one partition, select the entire
disk.
l If any partition (such as an EISA partition) precedes your system partition ,
select the entire disk. This ensures tha t you can remotely boot f rom and
recover
the disk.
l If your disk has a system partition and a data partition, select one of the
partitions
and complete the wizard. Then run the wizard again and protec t
the other partition. This provides complete protection with maximum
flexibility
.
However , if DiskSafe Express was installed on the da t a partition, protec t
the entire disk rather than the individual partitions . This ensures tha t you
can
remotely boo t from that disk.
