Transferring hard disks to a new storage system
If your storage system unit fails bu t the hard disks themselves are viable, you can
transfer
your existing hard disks t o a new storage system, thereby preserving all your
existing da t a .
To transfer hard disks to a new storage system:
1 . Shut down both the old un it and the new unit.
Caution: If you do no t shut down the new un it before you insert the hard
disks, you will be promp t ed to re-initialize the disks. If you do this, all t he data
on your hard disks will be lost.
2 . Transfer the hard disks t o the new unit .
3 . Connect the new un it to your network and power on the new unit.
4 . Access the Manager for the new un it (as described in “Accessing t he Manager”).
As long as the new unit is in t he same subnet as the old unit, you can access the
Manager using the same procedure you used previously . However , if the new
un it is in a dif f erent subnet, you might have to install the Console on a computer
in the same subnet as the storage system and use the Console to access it.
5 . If t he firmware in the f lash memory of the new unit dif f ers from t he firmware on
the
hard disks, a message displays, prompting you to update the flash memory
on the storage system with the firmware from the hard disks. Click Update to
proceed
. If you don’t want to upgrade t he firmware at this time, click Shut Down
to shut down the system.
Note: If the firmware on your new un it is newer than the firmware on
your hard disks, you might want to contact your vendor about obtaining the
latest firmware. Refer to
“Upgrading
the f irmware” for information about
upgrading to newer firmware
If no message displays, you can manage the unit as you did before.
